of the factory.
The mill is built of brick, throe .stories
and a basement high, and cost about
?:'.."), Mi'). Tho capacity of the mill is
what is termed a seven ret factory, with
looms and other machinery in pro
portion. Hast -car the used about
4 .O.OU) pounds "of wool, at an average
cost of 'Sji cents per pound. Thev
made, finished goods, :iK,XX 3ards,
making about double this amount in
goods woven, and 13,000 pair of bl 111
uets. The annual ex penses for opera
tive labor is about i?4u,iH), and the total
expenses for manufacturing 117,-';1 Hi,
to which should be added SUO.OOO for
other expenses, such as discount, insur
ance, taxes ana other items, making a
total expense of tj:is,0tx). Tho amount
of the capital stock of the ( 'oni pan y is
$l00,M)t), which is paid up, and they
employ a capital stock of about &i00,0iKJ
to carry 011 their business.
We shall next week give a business
statement of tiie two planing nulls and
other business enterprises going 011 in
this place.

being unable to go East on account of
his business. Mr. A. G. Walling, of
Portland, will probably go in his place.

any one to get ready. Mr. Walling's
appointment would give general satis

our readers hear of on: so foolhardy
as to intend running a paper, "in

established journals arc not making
their salt, two of wliich are kicking
very hard in tho traces with the hope
of getting enough of that filthy me
dium of trade, in the shape of hush
money, to adjourn, sine diz, whilo
those who are putting gold into their
old hidden stocking, or paying the
premium on their insurance policies,
can be counted on the fingers. It is
the bad pay subscriber that is in a
great measure to blame for tho inertia
of tho Oregon rcss, and the sooner
ho stops crying with the Seminole
chief, ''Go count your chosen where
the fell beneath ray leaden rain," tho
better it w ill bo for the State at large
and tho ah editor, in particular.
Mills Dcsthoyed by Fire.
About 12 o'clock on the night of the
oOth, Captain MaJoram Crawford's
llouring mills, situated" at Lafayette
were ilestroye.l b- lire. Tho fire is
supposed to have been the work of
an incenliary. The loss sustained is
about 68,000. If tho sympathy of
the Captain's many friends in Ore
gon City will prove any consolation
to him, ho mav re;it assured that he
has it in heart-felt abundance.

California Elections. On Wed
nesday the Municipal (in San Fran
cisco) State and Congressional elec
tions were held in California. There
were three tickets in the field Dem
ocratic, Independent and Republican.
Up to the time of going to press no
returns had come in, owing to the
number of tickets in the field, the
scratching, and mode of conducting
the election.

steamer Ohio, which sailed to-day
for Liverpool, takes out 2,400 crates
of Delaware poaches. The steerage

cold air. This is the lirst venture of
the kind.
The national committee of the
Union League of America met to
day. A movement was inaugurated
looking toward a union of all ele
ments of opposition lo tho Demo
cratic party, especially in the South.

vorable weather for scouring tho
grain crops could bo wished for than
has been experienced in tho last
three weeks, up to Monday, and it is
an absolute fact that tho balk of tho
finest crop of wheat, barley and oats is
secured in good condition and put in
stack, beyond fear of damage hy
rain. A largo acreage of corn is
planted this year in tho Stale; pros
pects very poor; tho weather has
been uniform and tho rain too cool
for ripening.
Sr Louis, Aug. 27. Reports from
100 points in Arkansas, West Ten
nessee and Northern "Mississippi
show that the general crop prospects
are of the most gratifying character.
Thsre are abundant crops of wheat
and oats in most of this, region,
(lood crops of small grasses were
male, and all has been harvested
and protected save corn. The latter
has ia all instances matured, and
only awaits convenience of planters
to harvest.

Court of Oregon, that all conveyan
ces made by claimants under the do
nation or land law are valid, when
m ule after July 17th, 1851, by per
sons who have tiio land ollico certiii
cato of final proof, although tho con
veyance bo made before tho issuing
of the patent. I his is in accordance
with the views maintained by Judge
Thornton in his pamphlet on Salem
titles; and it settles definitely and
probably forever tho title to all the
property in Salem, except in a few
cases whore great carelessness and
want of skill in drafting deeds have
lefe open a way through which tho
Wilson heirs may seek to appropri
ate tho property of honest citizens.
The magnitude and importance of
this decision on titles, even through
out the State, cannot bo well overrat
ed. Judge Deady dissented from
Justice Field's opinion.
The census returns from Tolk
county, which have just been com
pleted, show the following, popula
tion and other statistical facts: Males
21 years of age and over, 1,211; males
under 21 and over 10, 720; males un
der 10, 809; females over 18, 1,03:3;
under 18 and over 10, 181; under 10,
742. Total population. 4.91 G. Land
under cultivation, 71,003 acres;
wheat, 002,017 bushels: oats, 238,009

corn, 1,439 bushels; sheep, 22,731
