o o o - . i O THE EHTEBPRI8E. Filth : Foul Water t ho Cause of Boiler KxjiJosions. Tii'' f,.ll'Tvi:i5 intenistinc matter is collected" from a recent report of A. T. ILiv to the Secretary of the U. S. Tn;.i.iry on the sul'ject of steam boiler explosions. His remarks are quite novel, an I Avell worthy a close consideration: When we boil pure n-ater the steam rises lvuhirly in spheres from the bottom of tlie" vessel to the surface of the water. Steam at a like tempera tare and pressure has at all times the same number of molecules in a like volum?, and the true measure of its energy may be calculated Avith math ematical precision. Water assumes three natural or allotropiu forms liquid, solid and vapor; in all these forms 'it qualities inhere. What is true of a malecule of water, ice or steam, is true ol the whole volume of either these several forms beingdue . ..;..!,. a pli'ini'f' of temnerature. Wat -r 'istlie m st stable compound j Think of It. If there had been a scare it v .f water there would have been ;i Surplus of steam. AVhen boilers lire ea.ilv and steam freely there is no danger of any fearful disaster. If boilers give way under such condi tions, itTis simply from rupture, the ttV'cts of )ver-pr.:ssurc, and not ex plosions in any sense of the term. There can be no violent explosion from steam made from clean water, free from organic matter. At least, niter muw years' close observation, coupled with direct investigation and rese.uvii. I h ive failed to find an in stance wh-u-e pure simple steam made from clean water ever exploded with in a rang-1 of from lotos, up to o0) Ib.s. pressure to the square inch. But I 1: ad that explosions in steam boilers revel in lilt II and foul water. Tate, for iusti'ice, the Mississippi and its tributaries, and it will b3 found that steamboat boiler explosions have 1). v:i mast frequent in the vicinity of large cities, :md as we go down the river. The lower Mississippi his Ik en term -d a graveyard, while in that portion of tae river above St. 1j uis, iueluding the Illinois, where the waters are comparatively pure and free from nitrogenous matter, explosions have beqi very rare, whilo the Ohio, from Cincinnati down, is noted for miny steamboat disasters. The most destructive and terrific ex plosions have occurred in the spring o the year, when the -waters were loided with organic substances, cirtliv salts and oleaginous matters. When we boil foul wacer we rind it tu mil It U' us, accompanied with a low. bumping sound, with tits and starts, so violent in some instances as to jump bodily out of or even burst an open vessel. This antagonism to the boiling of any compound solution is cause 1 bv tha attraction of these for- ei 'ii particles for each other (chem ieal action and reactioa) , while in the boiling of pure water there is no chem ieal action whatever. (treat rivers, like those in the Ohio, Missis sippi and Missouri valleys, are great natural sewers, and their waters at ee.-tain seasons of the year are loaded with organic remains in every stage of putrefaction, while city wells and th j.se around factories frequently bo co;ne great sink-holes Jind recepta cles for matter. My researches show that $uch waters hold in solution and carry in suspension from six up to sixty-tlrve grains per gallon of or ga a'c substances, to which miv bo added copious quantities of oleagin ous matter in certain localities and the salts of ammonia X, 113. These substances lind their way into steam boilers, where they rapidly undergo chemical change, distillation, con centration, and sometimes violent de composition that is, culminate in terrine explosion. These organic skeletons, glycerine salts, albuminuus substances and auimoniacal gases found in water, consist ehiellv of carbon, hdrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, and it is among such nitrogenious combinations and types that wo tiud somo of tho most remarkable explosive bodies. They are not only aeriform, but they are gases of the most subtle and potent eharaet. r; gelatinous substances, in which the different elementary atoms are- cheiaically combined iu tho same molecule, that -are liable to sudden and violent decomposition whenever the opposing forces to which they owe their existence become deranged by heat or some external can ;e. Their af- liaitiesaro very feeble; beiice their fre quent destruction at hiu'i tempera- tiues.o Merolv a molecular disturb ance of auv kind mav cause violence Their combustion being internal and iustantanious. they devekpe a force at least ten times greater and one hundred times quicker than that of steam pressure sudden and violent enough to destrov open vessels. But in clean water we have the most sta ble substances known, under the three distinct forms named, either of which aiay be ha I out of the other by mere Iv a change of temperature. As I s lid before, heat alone cannot decompose water, hut eloe'rieitv read ily resolve it into its original elements and chemical action being the source of electricity, water iu the midst of Tickle and treacherous company be comes demoralized and loses its vir tue and stability, and goes off in a gaseous state in time of reaction. This frequently occurs when boilers explode, as neither water nor steam are ejected from them, but an iullam abl3 gas is evolved. Under such c jn d 1 1 ions t h e on gineer , d 4 id or al i ve, is convicted of murder for allowing the boilers to become drv, when in reality, a moment before the explo sion . his boilers contaked a full gutge of water. Not -Coming. Senator Mitchell vox in San. Francisco on the lCth ' inst. It is stated that he will not : vis-t Oregon during the recess of Congress. This, is probiblv on ae- ! cot-.nt of avoiding certain exolana- j tioas iu regard to IVdei! atmoint- ? Aleuts. He mav as well explain now as hereafter. The time for explana tion will coino sooner or later. a; . .' --- w The following docksologer i3 from a Mississippi quill driver, and has a local application: "As -we walked past a couple of ladies the other day, at the Mineral Sjuings, one of them, we are inform ed, observed a large sized patch, on the seat of our pants, and made merry over the discovery. Well, we do wear old clothes it is true, but we might afford to treat ourselves to better ones, if the husband of the one we refer to would come to the office and pay us $18 which he has been owing us a long time, for subscrip tion and job work." This brought tho money. The latest amusement is termed the "Printer's Delight," and is performed- in tho following manner: Take a sheet of note paper, fold it up carefullv and enclose a bank note sutlicientlv large to pay up arrears and a vear in advance. And what adds immensely to the feat is to send alon- fie name of a new subscriber with" cash to balance. Keep your eve on the printer, and if you detect a'smile the trick is a success, lry it! It is an in valuable protection to immigrants and persons travelling or temporarily residing in the mala rious districts. If taken occasionally or daily while exposed to the infection, that will be ex creted from the system, and cannot accumulate in sufficient quantity to ripen into disease. Hence it is even more valuable for protection th-in cure; and few will ever suffer from Intermittent-; if thev avail themselves of the protec tion this remcfy affords. For I.ici-r Coitifdaiiits. arising from torpid ity of the Eivcr, it is an evcellent remedy, stim ulating the laver into healthy a-tivity, and pro ducing many truly remarkable cures, where other medicines fall.
