' trv is peculiar v ad ted j ti as pecuaaio adapted j ig- of fruit as Oregon it o wif0oii , ii In a conn to the raisin is quite necessary to resort to some means of preset-Ting in enter In save tLe waste 11. at otliorwise would im poverifch the i)rotuccr. The best means of doing this is one of the vital questions of the Jay. For more than twenty years the efforts of the most interested have been turned in that direction, but until about five years ago, every effort proved a failure. One of the first efforts was a vertical chamber the green fruit being put in at the top and taken out at the bottom being moved continually into increasing heat and decreasing moisture. This was found to leave the fruit in a dry and tasteless con dition, the same as the ordinary dried, fruit of cemraerce. Added to the bad condition of the dried product, was the danger of burning, which the inventor was unable to overcome and in the face of all these difficul ties, the machine was abandoned. This was the fate of all the plans until Charles Alden constructed a vertical chamber that received the green fruit at the bottom, where it was subjected for a few minutes to an intense heat, and then elevated iar enougu tor another trav ot Iresli fruit to be placed beneath it, and thus modify the heat. And thus it was carried step by step to the height of about sixteen feet, when it was found that the fruit was well cured, moist and sweet the starch of the fruit having changed by chemical action, to sugar, increasing the richness and the ilavor of the pro duct, making it equal, and as those who use it contend, better than the green fruit. ut during these yei'rs of experi iivnt, Mr. Alden was not alone. From the patent office at Washing ton there lias been issued seventy seven patents for fruit-preserving aparatus of various kinds, only one of which has stood the test of experi- j ment. The farmer cares not how line I or plausible the theorv. "What he ! wishes to know is, does it work well? j has its product from year to year I found a profitable sale in the markets ! of the world? has it established a j character in those markets upon j which we can depend for a speedy sale of our fruits? Then that ma- chine must be valuable, and the cost ,s lmt a secondary consideration. Valuable articles are always held at valuable rates, when the indifferent or the worthless can be bought at almost any terms. There is one fact more wa would mention, ard that is, in the markets, east and west, we see quotations of but two kinds of fruit, the common dried fruit of commerce, and the Alden evaporated product. J;:t we cannot dwell or. this picture, and will hurrie-Hy pass over a few othes facts. Perfection does not come in a mo ment. Five years have been spent in improving and systematizing the Alden evaporators, so as to econo mize labor and thus benefit the pro d ace. No sooner had the Alden proved its utility than many others, envying his success, endeavored to produce a rival machine. Among the first of these was Charles A. Soy n ton, of Vineland, New Jersey. His patent was granted April 23d, 1S72, und he claimed in his specifications, forming part of his letters patent, as follows: "It (the dryer) consists in the ar arngement of a rotary rack that con tains the fruit-supporting shelves," etc. "Exposing all the fruit to averaging degrees of heat, accord ing to the distance from the place where it was put in. The invention also consists of the combination of a fiin, by means of which air is drawn through the aparatus with the desir ed effect." It will be seen that this is an effort to evade the Alden patent by secur ing "decreasing heat and increasing moisture"' by artificial means, instead of the natural current of heated air, by forcing it around a horizontal cir cle by the use of a fan. The inventor spent much time and large sums of money, but finally abandoned his machine as worthless having spent soihb?1j,000 in his experi ments. This was the legitimate end of the Boynton dryer, and still the Alden went steadily forward, gaining day by day a more exalted reputation among those interested in the fruit product of the country. But Amercian genius cannot lie dormant. Yankee ingenuitv must j move a little faster than the world, J and so Mr. Flummer, of San Fran cisco, resurrected the Hoy n ton the ory, with the addition of hot air or steam pipes. His letters patent bears date Dec. 20, 1S7-1 two rears and eight months later than the Boy n ton patent. The Flummer claims, ac cording to the specification forming part of their letters patent, as follows: "My invention relates to a fruit dryer in which the racks for holc'.ing the fruit pans, or plates, revolve and carry the fruit around a horizontal course through a heated chamber. 4Y' represents a fan that may be used to carry the air around the dry ing chamber, for aiding and improv ing the circulation." Thus it will be seen that the main the Boynton and the lentical both revolve ie fan to force a circu- l:,.,.-.ri.,i..:.. r c ii j m'.i'jii -'i nui mi. vyim 01 luese u tried three years ago, and failed. The otllt'r liaS not et bccn thoroughly j tcstea as the recent date of its n-iteut ! -m , -i , V-ucut will fully show. Unt in the pamphlet of the Plummet- dryer, page 0, it is stated that Mr. riummer '-is the first man to depart from the old principle and establish a new one entirely." This is certainly a mistake, us our quota tion from ioynton fully sustains. )at enough of this. The Alden was tried for over thrCr- years before it was introduced int.) California, where it war, in successful operation two years before finding its wav to Oregon. Its fruit has been tried in every market and in every climate. It is f avorably known and appreci ated. It has au established market value. There is no longer the neces sity of experiment, and no risk in marketing the product. i So much in favor of the Ahleu. IJut we would have it known that wo have no interest in either or any pro cess. All we wish to do is to so im part the little lights we have, that the fruit growers of our county may choose widely and well. Ye know that there are big swindles in patents and many frauds are palmed off on the unsuspecting for a genuine arti cle. Our advice would be, let inven tors do their own experimenting, and when proved valuable, it will be am ple time to invest. AVo have no sur plus wealth in Clackamas county to to waste on worthless patents. Icfore closing, however, one point we should notice. Xature does her work well. The natural course of hot air is upward, and it requires no machinery to draw or force it. Again. Steam engines are rather expensive as well as dangerous luxuries. Who for a moment would contend that it is cheaper to run a live horse power engine than it is to fire a parlor stove? Doshlea, engines are constantly getting out of repair, pumps fail to work and delay if not destruction will bo the result. Appropos to this is another fact. The Ahlen Company of this city hail a meeting two weeks ago. They studied well the claims of the various dryers and especially the Flummer. They concluded that in the end it would be more expensive than the Alden and accordingly ordered two additional dryers of the latter, their former order having gone forward some time ago. And yet we are as sured that if one Plummet will do the work of three Alliens and do it as claimed, one cent a pound, or even a half cent a pound cheaper, that they will yet invest in a Plummer, and if the Plummer agent will set up a ma chine ami test it in Oregon City, if it does as they claim, they can have their cash. We hope that there will be a fair trial and that the people of our coun ty will secure the best. Put the Alden is a fact well established, and the others, as yet, are but experi ments. We have said this much for the reason that fruit is the leading inter est of our county, and we have a desire to aid every laudible effort to bring about the best results. The best remedy for it, whatever the cause, is I Iostetter's Stomach Jlitters. the tonic and alterative properties of which rapidly diffuse themselves thro' the entire system, revive and reinforce every dormant faculty, and restore a natural condition of body and mind. Some moral reformers insist upon Cue disuse of all stimulants. This, to say the least of it, is irrational. All com petent physieians admit that a pure, medicated st imulant is one of the mot useful remedies known. As a tonic and invigorant for the aged and languid, Hostetter's I'.itters has no equal. It is the sheet-anchor of the feeble and de bilitated. In all climates and in e cry species of disorder which breaks down the bodily strength, it is an absolute specific. It is also an invaluable rcme dv for sea-sickness. The nausea and retching caused by the rolling and piehing of a vessel at sea paralyzes the bodilv and mental energies, and those who "sutler from it would do well to resort to the I'.itters as a means of a sure and permanent relief.
