The road is lined with men and pack trains, going to the land of gold and silver. It has been traced for about twenty miles through a very rough country. Guides get from. S10 to 820 per day to trace the lead. Calvig says he crushed a few pounds of ore and it averaged 10 cents per pound in gold. A town has sprung up in a few weeks. It is to be known as Mammoth City. " A Magnificent Conception, Wonderfully carried out." Th1 necessity of a popular medium for the representation 01 the productions of our great artists, has always been recog nized, and many attempts have been made to meet tlie want. The successive failures which so invariable followed each attempt in this country to establish an art journal, did not prove the inditrerence of the American jxopie to the claims of high art. So soon as a proper appreciation of the want and an ability Ut meet it were shown, the public at onoe ralied with en thusiasm to its support, and the result was a great artistic and commercial triumph THKALDIN'E. THE ALDIXE, while issuod with all the regularity, has none of the temioraryor timely interest characteristic of ordinary periodicals. It is an elegant miscellany of pure, light, and graceful literature ; and a collection of pictures, the rarest specimens of artistic skill, in black and white. Al though each succeeding number alfords a fresh pleasure to'its friends, the real value and beauty of The AUline will be most ap preciated after it is bound up ut t he close of t he year.
