The County Commissioners, recognizing the im portance of preserving the county records from lire, at their term in July, ordered from the Hall Safe and Liock Co. a large lire-proof safe. The safe ar rived here vesteruay and was placed in the room under this ollice. It is an excellent piece of work throughout, being the linest linish we have seen. It is L8 inches high :' 52 wide and 32 deep, and has the Hall combination lock, without Key or key-hole and weighs 5,000 iKiunds. The cost of the sate is 'J00. YV e think this is money well invested. These safes are meeting with great success in this State. Mr. Stilshire having sold over one hundred. They had m in the late Chicago tire and every one preserved their contents in good condition. Fell off the liumaE. Gen. A. L. Lovejoy fell oil' the railroad bridge this (Thursday) morning, just after the morning train passed, injuring him so severely that he was carried to his res idence insensible, and received a gasli in his head about two inches long. We have not been able to get full particu lars of the sad accident, and trust that the General may soon be about again. Hard Trip. We learn that Mrs Meld rum, on her way to Salmon river met with a painful accident, being thrown oil" the horse, and painfully in juring her shoulder, the party hav ing arrived at their destination allright with this exception. Returned. Mr. W.1I. Ilighfield re turned from his trip to San Francisco on the steamer which arrived at Port land yesterday, and is again ready for business. A I'aUc Husband and Vife. We take tho following account of a first-clasa sensation from the Ore gontan of last Tuesday. The wife of Smith has her father residing in this county, about two miles south of this placo. We aro also informed that said Smith aud his affinity, were iu the vicinity of this town last Tuesday morning: East Portland rejoices in a first class case of crim. con., the develop ment of which within the past few days has thrown the social tranquil lity of that quiet burg Into a stte of spasmodic exciteuent. Tho circum stances of this case are substantially as follows, which we give the reader in brief: About six weeks ago a gentleman residing in Idaho, fur nished his wife with 8800 for the purpose of enabling her to visit two married sisters who live in this city. The lady, whose nainG we suppress, arrived here in safety, accompanied by a little daughter. She stopped at the house of a brothemn-law,- resid ing in Hast Portland, and for a short time everything passed smoothly along. The brother-in-law, who is a well-known member of the turf sporting fraternity, had in his em ploy a man named Dan Smith, who personated the role of chief holster. This skillful manipulator of the curry-comb and brush; was not blessed with great persoual beauty, the "gift of gab," or the power to stir men's souls, but he captivated the eye of the fair Idahoan. Her strong pre ference for Smith soon became ap parent to her sister -and brother-in-law, and finally assumed such a de cided character as to lead the family with whom she was stopping to sur mise, and subsequently to strongly suspicion, that relations of an im proper nature existed between the jiarties. Smith has a wife and three children, but be seemed unmindful of all else save bis new-found affinity. Matter- continued to grow worse, until the brother-in-law determined to ascertain the truth or falsity of his suspicions. It did not take long to satisfy himself beyond doubt that a criminal intimacy was being main tained between the suspected parties. But one course was left, and that was to discharge Smith, and forbid the false wife ever to enter his house again, this was done and the doors were closed against the guilty pair. The wife finding herself placed in an extremely awkward predicament, came over to her other sister, who resides in this city. But tho story of her guilt preceded her, and she was refused admittance. She return ed to East Tortland, where she was joined by Smith. They proceeded to a hotel and registered their names a3 man and wife, and occupied one apartment on Friday night. Early on Saturday morning the landlord, who did not know either party, was informed of the peculiar relations which existed between man and wo man. He went to the door of the guilty pair, and, finding it locked, unceremoniously kicked it in, and then bade them to depart instanter, and not to stand on the order of the same. It is needless to add that they improved the suggestion offered by the landlord. Meantime the wife of Smith heard of the doings of her spouse, and forthwith swore out a warrant for his arrest, on the cbarere of adultery. The warrant was placed in i ne hands of F. K. Neal, City Mar shal, who proceeded to the hotel, but found the bird had flown. Smith and the woman caught wind of the proceedings, hired a buggy and star- leu ior Jiuwaukio. jeal heard of it, and mounting a horse gave chase, but Smith's animal proved too fleet, and the Marshal was forced to give the race up. It is said that the cou ple are hanging about the country, fully intent upon emigrating to some more congenial region. Full partic ulars have been telegraphed the hus band in Idaho, who, it can well be supposed, will h.ivfi tm -.nc.; t Ui ' x tuiuw uiiy Mist quantities of saline raoiatnre after his recalcitrant spouse. A telesram from Ashland, dated the 11th inst. says that Mr. E. B. Hatton, who ar rived to-day from Fort Klamath, brings news of the shooting and kill ing of Oliver Hurt by William Brown on the 8th inst., in Spracne river valley. Oliver Hurt is the man who killed - George Brown, brother of William Brown, last Spring, and was tried and acquitted on the ground tat the killing was done in self-de fense. &7"For the very best Photographs, tro to P.radley & Rulofson's Gallery with and Ki.KVAiuii, 4a louttjomery Street, Ban Francisco. An Unwholesome Season. The closing days of winter and the early days of spring nre very trying to t he feeble and sensitive and are apt to affect unpleas antly even the more robust and vigorous. Nothing can bfe more uncongenial to the nerves or more depressing to the spirits than damp, chilling winds, fogs and cold rains, and of such unwelcome visitors we have a superabundance at this season. L Common prudence suggests, therefore, the propriety of fortifying the system against these insidious enemies of health and comfort, and the experience of more than a quarter of a century points to llostetter's Stomach Bitters as the all-sufficient sani tary safeguard under such untoward cir cumstances. As accession of vital strength and energy is what is required to meet and overcome the uuhealthy elements now present in the atmosphere. This increase of vital power, so necessary to meet the extraordinary drafts which an inclement sr-ason makes upon the system and the constitution, can be readily acquired by takin;; irom two to three doses of Ilostet rers bitters daily during the winter and sfrinff months. The nature of this cele brated restorative is well known to the public. It is composed of an absolutely pure diffusive stimulant, medicated with the extracts and juices of the most effec tive tonic, alterative, anti-billions and lax ative roots and herbs known to medical science. To the combination of these ex cellent inrt-dieijts. in proportions suitable to the exigencies of enteebled, languid and diseased systems, the great tonic-alterative owes its efficiency as a preventive and cur ative. A course of it, commenced now, will prevent all danger of fever and ague, rheumatism, or other ailments arising from cold iind damp peculiar to i.-ring months, and also prove a safeguard against the attacks of dys;epsia and liver com plaint which so frequently .occur at this period of the year.
