T'Vault, now deceased; the orator, Hon. Peter II. Iiurnett, is dead, and Capt. Knighton is also dead. Tlie rest of those named in the proceedings are still living, most of them now citizens of this count v. We give the original cony of the pro ceedings, which is as follows: We are highly gratified with tlie suc cessful eiforts of the committee of ar rangements, and the citizens generally, to celebrate the anniversary of Ameri can Independence in an orderly and becoming manner and with a truly pa triotic spirit, evincing thereby the un dying interest of American citizens, in tlie ierpetuity of the monuments and happy results of the noble deeds of '7G. This day csm never lose interest with the American people while thev retain the enjoyment of national indepen dence, individual liberty and a partici pation in the free institution of a happv Republic. A day that marks the be ginning of a new era in the world's history an era, noted as tlie age of religious, jioliticsil and mental freedom and improvement a day consecrated to liberty and upon wliose sacred en joyments no selfish or ungenerous spirit should ever bo permitted to en croach. Upon the annual return of this memorable day, the American, wherever he wanders, and whatever be his circumstances, feels the warm devotions of his soul devoted to the Jod of Liberty suul the free and be loved institutions ot "his own nsitivo iand, which he can never forget or cease to love while his heart remains susceptible of the hallowed inlluence of unaffected patriotism. It cannot therefore lie a matter of surprise that we should celebrate tlie birth-day of our national independence, even on the shores of the Pacific. We give below : brief summary of the proceedings of the day in Oregon City, under the su perintendence of the committee of ar rangements, named in our last: A very handsome liberty-pole, which had been presented to tlie committee by Mr. Win. Holmes, was erected un der the superintendence of Col. Win. Finlev, Marshid of the day, and fol lowed by a round of 31 guns. The pro cession was formed :tt the Citv Hotel and marched in double lile under com mand of Col. Finley with the Hag of the United States borne in front, to the Methodist Church, when the farther ceremonies ot tlie day were ojiciica with appropriate thanksgiving anil prayer by Lev. J. L. Parish. Tlie Dec laration of lndeiHMidcnce was then read from the stsind by A. L. Lovejoy, Ksq., after which the" Honorable 'Peter II. P.uruett, Orator of the day, addressed a crowded siudience of both sexes in an extempore speech, in which he ex pressed, in his tree and happy style, not only his own .sentiments, but those of tho 'community. The oration was well timed and judiciously adopted to our ieeuliar circumstances; but as Judge Iiurnett, at the reuest of the committee suul many other citizens, lias promised to write it out for puhli lication, we forbear any further re marks. We Iiorie to receive it in time for our next. '1 lie procession was then marched as before to the hotel, where a public dinner was prepared by Capt. II. M. KiiightoM, proprietor, by" order of tlie committee, which was for sill, and we believe gave general satis faction. The cloth Ix-ing removed, the following regular toasts were read suc cessively by A.L. Lovejov, sit the head of the tsible. smd M. M. MeCsirver, at the foot, and cheered sis follows. Mrs. Mary Ilurd delivered her second lecture (and we hope the last) in this place last Wed nesday evening, to t very few hearers. We were otherwise engaged, conse quently we hsive to tsike what we sire informed from which to judge her lec ture. We learn that she is anything but interest ingm'itUer in her delivery or subject matter. For example, she asserted that a "child bom out of mar riage was as good as anyother, so long as it was trom the man the woman iov ed." That may be her view of matters. Decent women will think otherwise, and if this is her platform, we think she should smnouce her position so that resectable women wilt not ue ueceiv ed by going to hear her. - Letter L,ist.
