We are in re ceipt from the publishers, Scribner it Co.. the urst number of their new illus trated magazine for girls and boys St. Nicholas. It is by all odds the hand somest . !iil Iren's magazine in Ameri ca and t lie world for I hat matter. The same superb taste which adorns Serib ner's, with elictrant illustrations, is manifest in the Children's m iga.ine. Among the contributors we ii"lb" th-. familiar name of Noah Drooks, William Ctilk-n Ih vant, Rebecca Harding Da vis, Celia Thaxter and laicretia I'. Hale. Mrs. Mary M apes Dodge is the l-Muress, and she introduees herself to the young folks in a charming little edit. rial which is sure to win friends for the magazine. The publishers de serve to succeed in their 'ellorts to in troduce a fresh and healthful element into the juvenile literature of America. " I Tii.it literature needs pruning badly. Good luck to the St. Nicholas. Spkcclation Don't .Pay. The X. Y. Journal of Commerce, comment ing on the financial crash, says: "The truth is not made manifest, by the most startling illustrations, that speculators are not to be trusted, and that speculation does not pay. Nothing pays but business conducted on the settled rules of experience, with integrity and industry as the watch words of action. All else is a cheat and mockery. man has more chance of making a fortune bv buying lottery .tickets or playing faro than at the game of speculation in the street. If the distressing events of the past week have shaken the non sense out of the heads of the rising generation, an 1 taught them a lesson of sobriety and moderation in busi ness, they will have done good far outweighing the resulting calamities. I'ike at Salem. Last Sun.lay night, about II o'clock, the Chemek eta Hotel, at Salem, was discovered to be on lire. It was some time be fore the whereabouts of the fire could be ascertained, but it was fin ally extinguished without doing a great deal of damage. The loss sustained by damage from wafer to furniture was between 65.000 and $10,000 which is covered by insu rance. The energetic landlord, Mr. Wesley Graves, had everything in or der the next morning and not a meal was missed by reason of the disaster. Summary of State News Items. A man named W. TV. "We learn that on the 4th instant a sad accident occurred on the race track at La Grande. A young man named Dorris was training a liorse, which Hew the track and ran under a pole at one side. Dorris' head struck the pole, and his brains were knocked out, causing hi.s death in stantly. The affair caused much re gret among the friends of the youn man. A company of immigrants arrived at Dalles on Wednesday of last week from Iowa, en route for Walla Walla. They numbered near forty men, women and children. The" gentle men connected with this company, report that there are many families in the section of Iowa ther came from, who contemplate comin to this portion of the Pacific coast. The Jaeksonvill Sentinel of last Saturday says: "James C. Parker, the man who was stabbed at Ashland on Thursday evening of last week, by August Walters, died on Monday morning last. Walters is in jail here in default of 5,000 bail. He was somewhat roughly handled by the circus men, who threatened to" hang him, but was restrained from so doing by John Wilson, proprietor of the circus. None" of Walters' injuries were very serious, however. The Stttemitii says: "About half past four o'clock Saturday afternoon a young son of Mr. John'Minto met with a painful accident, and one which, possibly, may yet result seri ously. He and his 'brother, with several other lads, were hunting along the slough, and seeing some ducks on the water, his brother went across with the gun in order to get a better shot. When the brother iired at the ducks, notwithstanding lie and the other boys were some distance above the water, and out of the line of his range, one of the shot which must have glanced from the water or from some rocks near whieh the ducks were, struck him in the corner of the eye at the side of the nose, and probably striking a bone it passed around over the eyeball to near the outer corner, where it lodg ed. A Nest iii'Thieves. An Eastern exchange says that Harper, the defaulting Illinois Col lector of Internal Revenue, has made good his escape with a sack full of the people's money. His cashier, Albert Smith, lias been indicted by the grand jury of the United States District Court. First, he is charged with having received a bribe of 4,000 from H. P. We.steniian, for advising delay in the collection of cerlain rev enue la::es; al o with recei ing 4000 of the capitol stock of the Pekin Al- ohol Company :n a bribe; also with the receiving 3,500 from the Pekin, Di.sLiliing Company. Indictments have also been presented against P. Weslerman aod David T. Thomp son, of Pekin, for bribing Smith, and against Devi Parsons, Harper's deputy at Pekin, for embezzling o,000. The grand jury uncovered a full nest of robbers, defaulters and embezzlers, it s . ins. A few years in the penitentiary will help that Illinois ring to understand that the people and the courts are in no mood to grant indulgences to oilital rascality. In the words of him who swung around the circle a few years ago, stealing "must be made odious." We predicted the Friday before the election occurred in Wisconsin, that the Democratic, candidate for Governor with the entire ticket, w ould be elected. This was regard ed by some of our friends as impossible. The result has shown that we were correct in our judgment. Wisconsin has heretofore, given from 20,000 to 25,000 Radical majority. Tiie peo ple throughout the Great West are waking up to the corruption of the Ha lical party. Eighth Volumk.
