Marriage in Indian Life. Passing through an Indian say a Cowichan village of a morning, vou may chance to see a young fel low wranned ur iu his blanket, sit ting crouched up in the doorway of one of the lodges. That young man nas come on a delicate errand. He is a lover, and this is his way of go ing aoont tlie rather delicate busi ness of taking a wife, liv and bv the occupants of the lodge will get up and walk out, nobody taking the slightest notice of him. For a week this may go on; every day the young man coming and returning without being invited in. At last, if he is agreeable in the eyes of the parents, lie is asked in and food set before him if he is an honored guest, the food, such as the roasted or dried salmon, being prepared by the mas ter of the house and business opens. His friends bring forward the pres ents lie is prepared to give for the damsel, or an equivalent for the same, until he has no more. If the father is satisfied, all is well; if not, he must go elsewhere. This is the general rutioiKile of Indian marriages merely purchase. However, the : Indians themselves stoutly deny that it is so, and posssibly with truth. , They say that the presents are not ! given as the price of the wife, but onlv to express their value and rank, j a woman of low status in society j being valued at much less: if the ; father is a man of any ton at all, he j will send back with his daughter j fully as much as he received. All I I can say is that this is so rare, that I I never heard of it more than once or i twice. D -trothals in early youth, or j even in childhood, are common, and I as an earnest of good faith the parents r on both sides deposit a certain : amount of goods, commonly blan- kcts. These betrothals are generally ; respected, a breach of engagement ! being a serious cause of oifen.se to the ii-jured lover. Though at be trothal the price of the future wife is tolerably well known, yet the fath er can raise it it, in the opinion of tao majority of her tribe, she has ma terially improved since the date of that ceremony though, curiously enough, this is said to happen rather rarely. The betrothal may be can celled if during the interval the lover's third oiler for her is refused, supposing that no price has been iixetl at the time of bethrothal; but this generally gives cause to bitter ness, and not unt'reiuently to feuds. Young men, "before being married, will often to show their courage scratch their faces until the blood comes. That an Indian is not alto gether diilicient in sentiment and love must not, however be supposed from the matter-of-fact way he treats marriage. Many of their songs are about love, and often in the vicinity of Indian villages the traveler may notiee young rir shoots split down in the middle to tlie very ground. This is done by youthful lovers to see if they will" be faithful to each other. They split the top of the shoot with the nails, then carefully divide it downward and downward; but if one side breaks oil" at a knot, then one of them will prove untrue. But they will not be content with this augury, but w ill try and trv again until they can find a young lir which will act according to their wishes. From " 77e Ji ve of Jfut.-;,tfl."
