TWO OKKliOX STATESMEN PEN POR TRAITS OF THE RIVAL CANDIDATES F O It C O XlillBSSJIE N. Corrcsimndenco of the S. I. Chronicle. Portland, Sept. l'J, 1S.'. The Congressional contest in this State will open in a few days. Tlie Conventions of lioth parties have met and n; liieil their men. A brief de scription of these two men, made prominent by the events of the last few days, may not be devoid of inter est. I'lirani Smith (called "Hi" for short) is Republican, and J. V. Xes mith (familiarly styled " "ez") is Democratic. " Hi" is aliout six feet two, wears Xo. 11 boots and a Xo. 4 plug hat. lie fills a number 1VJ shirt, open in front, Monopoly collar, no jewelry. He eats as if he was in a hurry, talks loud and laughs a good .leal. Wears short chin whiskers, and is a very fair specimen of a maai. As to his oratorical powers I cannot speak, never having- heard him eloeute. He is reputed to lie upright and honest, and will undoubtedly do his duty, if elected. " Xez" is a man of less pleasing 1 e.: son al appearance, being low of s ature and something after the John Dull style of architecture. He talks I ut little excoopt to his particular friends, although he is probably more in sympathy with the people than Mr." Smith' Tho "Colonel" wears shoes, standing collar, and, when on his farm, a broad-brimmed black felt hat. He always walks with a cane, and is apparently i-." or oO years of ago. He is now Postmaster at La Creole, l'olk county, with a salary of Sl.o2 p r annum, and has a daughter, the prettiest girl in the county, who w ill probably assume control of the Postofiico il her father is elected to Congress. Tlie gentlemen are both con sidered wealthy. Mr. Smith is doing a large general merchandise business at Har risburg, besides speculating some in wheat. Mr. Xesraith owns the larg est and finest farm in polk county, cultivates a thousand acres, and runs fifteen gang-plows in ylowing season. Mr. Nesniiih is claimed by some to be suix-rior intellectually, and has hid much experience. The friends of Mr. Smith urge his his personal worth and undoubted integrity. We expect to have a "red hot" time. Weil The Redoubtable Hi came up on the Tuesday evening train. He leaped from the platform calling wildly for Odell". but Odell wasn't there. He rushed up to the Land Oilice with jaws considerably distended, and from there a runner was im mediately dispatched to Springfield for John Kelly, w ithout w hom, Odell, could give no responsible advice. When the shades of night began to mantle the quiet city appropriate time, a draw-curtain caucus was held in the Surveyor General's Office, for the transaction of imorttiil busim'ss, and for the purpose of ascertaining the probable propriety, unl cost of securing the campaign services of Commissioner E. L. Applegate, who of course was consulted and asked his price and alas! we must record it there came the difference of opinion Hi i Co., thought st.r hit would be a reasonable fee, Lish grabbed up his old white beaver and said he would not undertake such a nasty, hopeless case for less than .52,51 b Egad, how great men difl'er in opinions. Hvrh Eie. A Strang e Entry. The Sacra mento Record says: An odd entry for a premium was made at the Pavilion last night. Mrs. J. U. Walters en tered the hair upon her head. 31 is. Walters is a fine looking lady, the feet and eight inches in height. Four years ago she cut off her hair, shingling it close to her head. Since thenit has grown rapidly, until it is now five feet long, reaching with m eight inches of the ground when she is erect, The hair is tine, strong, thick and of a dark brown color. Mrs. Walters is a resident of Sacra mento. Will Possibly. The London Daily Xeics believes the financial panic in New York will possibly lead to the resumption of specie payment. The Republican papers who sup port Hiram are applying the appel lation of "true" Republicans to those they wish to drive to the work of boasting up High Smith. We are not very curious but would like to know what is meant by true Rej.ub licans. Extra Session of CoxGitess. It is rumored, at Washington, that in view of the financial trouble, the President has been advised to call an extra session of Congress. Another Anne Expedition. The British Association, in session at Bradford, England, have adopted a resolution urging a Government ex ploring expedition to the Arctic. -- Home Scnshine. Many a child goes astray, not because there is want of prayer. or virtue at home, but simply because home lacks sun shine. A child needs smiles as 11 nvers need sunbeams. Children look little beyond the present mo ment. If a thing pleases, they are a it to see it ; if it displeases, they are p -one to avoid it. If home is the place where faces are sour and words are harsh, the fault-rinding is ever ascendant, they will spend as many hours as possible elsew here. Natural LK-cu y Protect tlie Sjntciii. The human body is a machine, and therefore cannot endure forever; but like a watch or a sewing machine, it will last much longer if properly regulated and du ly repaired, t han If no pains were taken to keep it iu order.
