The captives and the captors remain
ed at Applegate's Ranch. Before
nilit came on Captain Jack,
the nmderer of General Canhy
and Seoneliin, the mutilator of
Meachani. were chained together
and placed witli the other warriors
in a small building adjoing Apple
Hate's house, under a strong guard.
Neither Jack nor Sconchin spoke a
word, and not a muscle in Jack's
face moved. Kcar-faced Charley
protested airainst the indignity, and
in hehalf of his fellow captives said
that none of them intended to escape,
even if opportunity offered. lie ob
tained lut little satisfaction and re
tired in disgust.
The usual Sunday evening serv
ices of the Warm Springs Indians
were dispensed with, and instead
thereof they held a glorious war
dance until midnight. They leaped
and howled ahout a tire and indulg

The efforts to Christainize the "Warm
Springs have been eminently suc
cessful. Most of them are members
of the Methodist Church. They
overl'ow with fervor.
All the military force of the expe
dition will be united at this point.
The cord to General Canby's hat
was found in Jack's satchel.
Colonel Green's capture was made
in Oregon and Col. Perry's in Cal

Their medicines were herbs and roots.
They have left this fact 011 record, and
the world seems to le now taking note
of it and returning to the first princi

is also the, most jopular. Thousands
of iK-rsons who only a few years ago
believed implicitly in all the jK.isons
which figure in the pharmaco'pia, now
pronounce this palatable tonic and al
terative an all-sufficient remedy for
dyspepsia, nervous debility, constipa

termittent fevers, and all the oidinary
disturl winces of the stomach, the liver,
the discharging organs and the brain.
The time is not far distant when most
of the powerful and venomous drugs
now so recklessly administered by
praetitioners of the 'heroic' school, in
eases that might easily le controlled
bv milder treatment, will lie utterly dis
carded bv all philosophical physicians.
As it is. the thinking public, who are
srenerallv ahead of the professionals,
have already put the dangerous prepa
ration aside ami adopted J Io.-tetter's
F.itters in their stead as a safe and ex
cellent household medicine, adapted to
almost every ailment except the organ

more than twenty years this famous
restorative and preventive has lxen

the public confidence, and it now takes
the lead of every advertised medicine
manufactured in this country.
