Donald McKav is thirty-.seven years of age. His father was a Scotchman, an.l his mother a Northern Indian woman. He lias boon brought ui altogetJer among the whites, wholly interested iu their welfare, and knows everv Indian trick in warfare. The following is the YrckxJuumars view of the situation, in this even ing's issue: The way matters appear at the lava beds tlie Indians are as defiant us ever, and endeavor to invito attack in their strong fastnesses in tho rooks and caves abounding in the lava-beds which are probably ninety miles in circumference, and every jiait i nat ural fortification each place of re treat being stronger. The Indians are not whipped, although driven out of their first stronghold, and oc casionally among the troops moving about their vicinity; the force em ployed is not largo enough to sur round the Indians, owing to the na ture of the rocky country, and the soldiers although doing well, are not good shots, on account of not being well drilled in target shooting. It is almost impossible to get a shot v.l an Indian, and then only a small por tion of him, as he hides behind rocks or lights in ambush. The Indians are not demoralized, a sir any suppos ed, but keep cut of sight until the troops leave, and then they are out again, as bold and defiant as ever, and in some stronger position. It is be lieved that the further they re tree, t the worse it will la: for both troops and settlers, and this will bo their tactics until the last one of them is killed. Wo need o:;peet no safety as the Indians are desperate and will massacre people and burn houses wherever they have the opportunity. In Surprise Valley and the ext ern portion of this country tho peo ple are generally excited on Indian matters. CJenoral Jotlorson C. Davis and party did not start for the lava-beds to-day. as was anticipated, but "will leave in the morning. No courier is expected to-nigljt, but to-morrow tlie bodies of Major 1 nomas. Col.
