Somebody lias been summing up the fhtc of kings and emperors as follows: Out of 2,540 emperors or kings over oi nations, 293 were tlfctiironoJ, G4 abdicted, 20 com mittal suicide, 11 went mad, 100 died on the battle-field, 123 were made prisoners, 25 were pronoun ced martyrs and saints, 151 were assassinated, G were poisoned, and 130 were sentenced to death. Maine. .1 Ordinance Xo. 10'J. Tie it ordained uul ct:tUi$hcd hy the City Council of O.ryon City, Sec. 1. That no person shall be engaged in, prosecute or carry on any trade, business or profession within the limits of Oregon City, hereinafter described until he or they shall have obtained a license therefor, as hereinafter provided. Sec. 2. That every person required by this ordinance to obtain a license, for which a license is required, shall pay the City Treasurer such sum or sums as hereinafter provided, thereupon with said receipt they shall apply to the City Collector, who shall issue a license to the parties applying in accordance with the receipt of the Treasurer. Sec. 3. That if any person or persons shall engage in or carry on any business or profession hereinafter mentioned, wherein a license is required by this ordinance, without taking out such license as in that behalf required, lie, she or they, shall on conviction thereof before the Mayor or Ilecorder, for every such offence, besides being liable for the payment of the tax, be subject to a fine not exceeding fifty (?50) dol lars, or imprisonment for a term not exceeding twenty days or both. Sec. 4. All licenses required, by this ordinance shall be paid in ad vance, in gold or silver coin. -Sec. 5." Theatricals, jugglars, including slight of hand performers, and shows of every description not otherwise enumerated in this ordi nance, shall pay a license of five ($5) dollars for each day and night ot their exhibition. Sec. G. The keepers or proprietors of every circus, shall pay a license of ten (10) dollars for each day and night of exhibition. Sec. 7. All lectures, readings or concerts, given to prtlic assem blages, where money is charged or received for the same, shall pay a license of two dollars and fifty cents, excepting those of a local nature for charitable purposes. Sec. S. That all hawkers, peddlers of goods, wares or merchandise, shall pay the sum of five dollars per month; JVocided, that should either of them desire a license for a shorter term than one month, the Collector may issue license by the week for the sum of two dollars per week, and in no case can license issue for a less sum than two dollars. Sec. 9. All persons peddling newspapers, bibles, religious tracts, farmers from the coimtry'peddling the products of their farms, who oiler to sell at wholesale or retail, goods, wares, merchandise or other commodities, traveling from place to place in Oregon City, shall not be regarded as peddlers under this ordinance. Sec. 10. It shall be the duty of the City Marshal to prosecute all persons violating this ordinance, and in all cases of conviction he shall receive, in addition to his usual fees, the sum of two (2) dollars to be taxed as ccsts of suit ; JVovided, that said sum be collected from the offender. He it ordained and established Ly the City Council of Oreyon City, Section 1. That no person shall sell spirituous or malt liquor within the corporate limits of Oregon City, without first having obtained a license therefor from the City Collector of Oregon City ; Provided, that this ordinance shall not apply to persons engaged in selling' liquors for medicinal purposes only, nor to persons who are selling spirituous or malt liquors by the quart, or less quantities than one quart, under license obtained or which may hereafter be obtained, from the proper authori ties under existing laws and ordinances. Sec. 2. Any person desiring to f ell liquors in quantities equal to or exceeding one quart, shall make application in writing to the City Col lector, and upon filing a receipt of the Treasurer for the sum of one hundred dollars in U. S. gold coin, he shall be entitled to have a license issue to expire in one year after the date thereof. Sec. 3. Any person violating the provisions of this ordinance, upon conviction thereof, before the Mayor or Recorder, for every offence shall pay aline not exceeding (-'50) fifty dollars, and not under twenty (20) dollars, or imprisonment for a term not exceeding twenty (20) days, or both. Sec. 4. It shall be the duty of the City Marshal to prosecute all persons violating this ordinance, and in all cases of conviction he .shall receive, in addition to his usual lees the sum of two (2) dollars, to be taxed as costs of suit.
