If the republican party is committed by the senator's utterances, it la an anti-league party and the issue will be clearly drawn in tho coming election providing the democratic party adopt a U'ague of Nations plank at San Francisco, which it will unquestionably do. But we are Inclined to think tho re publican party will not allow Itself to be committed by Senator Lodge, who has himself demonstrated a complete "right about face" on the league question since writing an ar ticle for The Forum magaiine In December, 1918. Much as tho re publican party would like to discredit Wilson and all his acts, much as it may sympathise with the senator's bitter verbal assault upon "the dem ocratic free trader president of so cialistic tendencies," it knows that straight anti-league plank will doom it to defeat The republican party cannot afford to say with the irrcconcilablcs within its ranks that the world war was fought in vain, and that selfish and greedy rivalry must continue to inspire the nations until thev are locked attain in bloody conflict. It cannot afford to say that a league of nations plan adopted by every successful power save the United States in the late war, and to which the United States stands pledged by its president, is wrong, and that Lodge and Borah and John son arc right. A dilemma con fronts the party, but if it would maintain its standing before the na tion and before the world, it will have to find -a way out that avoids the bog 'of league repudiation. Income tax payers may be inter ested in the information that Collec tor Miller requests this paper to dis seminate as follows: "On or before June 15th the second installment of income tax will be due and payable, and notices for this tax were scnt out some weeks ago. Persons who" fail to pay the quarterly installment' due on June 15th will be required, within ten days after -notice and de mand, to pay the entire outstanding balance on their income tax, as fail ure to pay one installment when due makes due and payable all tho re maining installments which would or dinarily be due on September lfth and December 15th." The downward trend of prices is merely a temporary manifestation or it will continue until much lower lev els arc reached, according to which sapient authority you read and be lieve. It is a matter wherein the theories vouchsafed by many ob servers must stand or fall when confronted by the uncompromising law of supply and demand. How ever, consumers happily have the power to influence the operation of this law in their own favor by les sened purchases. The Oregon Voter points out a pri mary election fact of considerable significance as indicating the sourco of Hiram Johnson's strength. The three Oregon precincts which proba bly contain the largest percentage of voters of German birth or extraction are East Mount Angel, West Mount Angel and Sublimity. Their com bined vote for president was as fol lows: Hoover 7, Johnson 448, Low den 17, Wood 38. . - Chicago is full of republican poli ticians, but it hard to say what the politicians arc ' full of these arid times. Leastwise, we are not assert ing that it is Wood alcohol. Wilson is charged with several grave political errors, but none was ever so serious as will be that of the republican party should it flatly turn down the League of Nations. In implying by his presence that he can learn anything about the political game at its convention, The Peer less One pays too great a compliment to the g. o. p. By tossing an anti-league monkey wrench into the works, one Hiram Johnson has certainly succeeded in keeping peace out of the republican convention. "Mexico Lies at Our Doors," says Senator Lodge.
