A VITAL NEED.
Based upon the h. c. of I. in gen
eral, the taxpayers . of Oregon are
faced inevitably with the higher cost
of higher education.
The people will vote May 21 on a
measure submitted at the special
session of the legislature that appro
priates $511,000 a year to Univers
ity of Oregon and $085,000 to the Or
egon Agricultural College. The Ore
gon Normal School also comes in for
increased maintenance under the
Fame bill.
The issue is literally one of life or
death 'for higher education in Ore

institutions.

"HERE'S TO PETE:"
The democratic nartv of 1'matilla
county and the state owes much to
Will M. Peterson of Pendleton, whose
candTdacy for the office of delegate
to the San Francisco convention is
meeting with pronounced favor.
i!r. Peterson not only ranks high
as an orator in this part of the state,
but he is an able and tactful organ
izer. What little success the tlemo
craic party has been able to attain
in this county, in which it is far out
numbered by its friends the enemy,
it owes largely to the unselfish and
devoted work of Will M. Peterson as
county chairman an always difficult
