We didn't get much acquainted with
the latter, except a, they have occasion­
ally saluted us as we drove past, but
their large sixe and lung |>ower was very-
noticeable.
The horses are strong
boned, muscular fellows, docile and
easily kept, just such animals as our
mills and factories need.

lied at hie liome in Poeell Valley on
Friday, June 19, and waa buried in the
{Greaham cemetery ou Sunday last.
Mr Manary had l>eeu ailing for a year
past but ,M not taken seriously ill u n-
, ill als.ut three months ago, when hie
' malady. Blight's disease, assumed a
serious form ami lie soon passed beyond
1 medical assistance. While awaiting the
last summon* he ls*re hie illness with
| calm fortitude and committed bis spirit
■ to the Great Father in a firm belief ol a
! life beyond the grave.
The deceased was born in Ontario.
' Canada, .March 9, 18tH. He leave, a
wife ami two children beside an aged
I lather and mother, Joseph and Caroline
; Man-try, and several brothers and ela­
ters, all of whom are well known resi­
dents ol this county.
For several years Mr Manary had
been a faithful member of Gresham
hxlge, No. 125, 1. O. O. F., under the
auapiees of which the funeral services
were held at the grave. These aervicea
were proceeded by a funeral rermon at
the Methodist church by Dr. A. Tbonip-
I son, that edifice heing tilled to overflow­
ing with a throng of mourner, and aym-
pathising friends.
The liereaved family and other rela­
tives have the most sinews expression,
of condolence from everyone in their
tail silliction.

Greabam will eelehrate the Fourth
I with a great, grand, glorious, noisy,
| rip-snorting celebration.
The celebration and barbacue will be
i held in Smith's grove. No better place

can boaet of such an ideal picnic ground
with such convenience«.
There are

band utand, confectionery and lunch
counter*, amusements, picnic grounds
etc , while immediately adjoining is
the ball park, where the liaaelta!! game
will take place, a, well a, the foot race,
and sports.
The O. W. B. company will put on
extra cars to accommodate the public.
The can will run till 12 o’clock at
night, giving all a chance to spend an­
other day in celebrating. The big fea­
tures of the day will be the Callitbump-
ian parade which will be a proceaaion of
plug uglies and Boats. It will start at
lit a. in. sharp, and the free barbacue
take, place at noon, A whole beef will
be roasted to a torn and served to the
public by experienced cheffs free of
charge.

which The Dalles Independents and
the Gresham Giants will contest fur.
Two hundred dollars first prixe and

the aereoplane race which is to fly one-
half mile and return at no less than
100 feet altitude.

are offered both in trotting and run­
ning heats. If you want to sfeud a
day in celebrating the Nation's birth­
day, come to Gresham July 4th.
