Take away all power to remedy such missteps, and there would be left no remedy. These reflec tions are thrown out, not because tlirre ia no merit in thia measure, for there is, but to cause reflection on the part of the voters. In fact many ut our new laws are still being weighed m the balance. and among these is the direct primary law. Con ceived for the purpose of taking the power out of the hand« of the losses and placing it in the hands of the people. It certainly killejJ the I mwscs , but, in all candor, lisa it left na in any better condition? If the reader will re flect a minute and then examine into the operation of this law he will find that while it has killed the political boas system, it has likewise left political chaos and opened the way for only the rich and men of means to rnn for office. Practically it lias abut out the man of •■nail means from participation in pub lic affairs. A candidate can spend aa much money as he may desire. The man of limited means stands no show whatever before the primaries. He has not the means nf conducting twn cam paigns as are now required. He must run the gauntlet of the direct primaries and then at the regular election also. The direct primary in its present form does not protect the people, and is not representative, as a minority candidate before the primaries may be nominated if he happens to get a plurality of a few votes. Just how all thia muddle may he rtraightened out and yet preserve the good features of the direct primary law Ta for somebody to work out.
