There are a good many land lubbers who fail to understand why the captain of a steamship will deliberately imperil the lives of the passengers under his care because the cost of safety is not made clear to him. The recent action of the cap tain of the Alliance deserves more than criticism. It is to be hoped that Uncle Sam will so ar range matters that in case of im periled lives or property assist ance can be accepted and the cost of rescue decided afterward. Woodward, Presi dent of the Oregon Press Associ ation, is calling for a large attend ance of quill pushers at the next January meeting of the associa tion. Every editor of a weekly or daily newspaper in the state is invited to attend this meeting, the object being that of a com plete reorganizaton. From pre sent indications there will be a large attendance. The meeting is called for, the middle of the month, and the last of the week. This to make it as convenient as possible to attend for newspaper publishers from all portions of the state. No editor is so poor, or so crowded with work that he can afford to stay away from this meeting. No organization in the state is more important than this. Yet there is no organization in the state that has been so poorly at tended. This is largely the fault of the publishers themselves. Nearly every state in the Union has a strong, well attended Press Association working for the good of its members and the state at large. The Press of Oregon compares favorably with that of any other state in the Union. We have as brainy, able, shrewd business men as any. We lack only in one thing — organization. Or ganization. however, happens to be the most important of all, for there is where the strength of the Press lies. It is time to get together. We have already fool ed away valuable time. . Thousands of dollas have been lost to the publishers of Oregon, and the people of the state are kept in ignorance of real and valuable information concerning tax lists and the laws of the state because the publishers of the state have allowed prejudice, envy and petty jealousy to stand in the way of organization. It is time to get together and work for the good of the cause. Broth er editor, take a hint, secure your transportation now, and rally to the support of President Wood ward in building up an organiza tion of which not only we but the state at large shall feel just ly proud. 1 8 15 22 26 M àsag ««.
