Bailey of Cornell university points out that more than a hundred years ago an effort was made In Penn sylvania to establish an agricultural school, but It failed. In 1824 n school was opened in Derby, Conn., fol' agri culture and relattxl work, but It did not long persist as an agricultural school. It was proposed to pur chase a farm near Albany, but the project failed owing to lack of money. Again In 1849 the governor appointed a board of eight commissioners to meet at Allmuy ami mature plans for an ag ricultural college, ami the outcome was that a charter was granted April 15. 1853. for the New York State Agricul tural college. After much dis cussion a farm of 4140 acres was pttr- cliased at |05 per acre. The trustees of th«* college took possession April 1. 1857. The cornerstone of the building was laid July 7, 1859.
