Certainly no one here would op pose the John lay project if it were feasible at this time, as this would be of far greater benefit to this sec tion of the state and a grand thins when consummated, but it M ill take -J2,0iK),tK)0 to put it through and there is no way no get this now. The simple fact is that these two fellows were cold, cakuiat ing murderers; the proof was on them and they could not get from under, so to save their miserable lives they turn traitor and make full confession. How absurd it is, any way, to try out such cases before they come into court; this instance is one in which organized labor lias certainly made a great mistake, and many of its leaders seem yet to be imbued with the idea that these fellows have sold out, in order that capital may have n case. It is the labor leaders that have been sold out, and sold cheap. 'lucre was ,the same tactics used on both sides in this case. The de tective agency and the prosecution both tried the- case before the pub lic in their efforts to manufacture favorable sentiment, and the labor ami socialist press were doing the uaiue thing on the other side; not j only this, but they were making such charges in many instances that j bordered onto treason, and alto gether too anarchistic for this coun try. Whether they will now get their eyes open and abide by the laws of this nation and await the produc tion of the evidence before rendering their verdicts and making- their .eharges remains to be seen. They Jiave certainly received a severe jolt and it should teach a wholesome lesson. Organized labor is suffering from too much of the wrong sort of lead ers. Its best people, and those of ihe truly American spirit, have no use for dynamite rule, and are willing to let the law have its course in all matters that come up; are willing also to iiave all troubles between labor and capital settled iu a peaceable and quiet manner and never resort to force, but the agitators and walking delegates are the fellows that stir up the mischief and bring odiuui upon g-ood cause. Organized labor is right, and has not yet received what ,is its due, but they have suffered greatly because of bad leaders and false friends. That many will go on as hereto fore in the face of what this confes sion has brought to light, seems im possible. But they will, and it may take many more revelations of the fcianie sort to set them right. We still have the Appeal to Reason Ht, and there will yet be much un reasonable agitation on the part of this organ and many others of a like nature, and the better reason and tense of a large number of people will not be reached, so we can expect that the good cause of union labor will yet pass through much travail because of its false friends. (iood roads throughout Oregon will, lie the chief topic discussed at the annual convention of County Judges and Commissioners of the State, which will be held in the Port land Commercial Club convention hall December 12-14.
