Thuesday, July 6 1911 BOYS' HOG CXI IIS. Attention of the boys of Morrow tounty is called to an article in an other column relating to the organi xation in this county of Boys' Hog t ilths. Read it over, and if you are interested, send your name at once to the editor of the Gazette, and bet tor still, if you can call at our ottice we can put you in touch with the proposition and help to get together the necessary material to put the or ganization of the Morrow County Hoys Hog Club on its feet and get our county in the lead in this impor faint work. As stated in the article referred to, the boys of the country lire beginning to take hold of different lines of the farming industry, and ar showing their "dads" how to do things up in the proper shape. We have the boys in Morrow countv to take hold of this proposition, and now is the time to begin so that we fan get some show.stuff ready for the IMstriet Fair. When it is understood that a very large proportion of the pork for our rapidly growing packing houses on this Pacific northwest coast is shipped in here from Nebraska and other states of the Middle West, it is made apparent that the hog industry of the state is being largely neglected. Just a short time back the market reports at Portland showed the re ceipt at the stock yards there of nine tarloads of hogs from the state of Nebraska. In commenting on this anomalous fact, the Portland Tele gram of recent date says: "Reports like this indicate con ditions that are economically a k to the people of Oregon. I're-eminently, we should be in the j.mrket as the producers and sell ers of livestock and dressed meats. We have the finest territory for supre macy in that sort of business that lies out of doors. We have the knowledge that stockraising is the Tilttmate perfection of scientific farm ing, for the reason that it brings splendid revenue without impover ishing the soil. Wehavethe demand tfjjat is not supplied and never will le supplied, no matter to what ex tent the industry should grow. Also U there the practical assurance of men who know the meat industry Irom A to Z that the future impor tance of this region in that line is hardly within our present concep tion. "Apparently the farmers of Oregon lave not begun to take heed of all these things as they should. As in dicated by this nine-car shipment !rom Nebraska, they are not swift in thnsing the dollars to be coined in the gruht of the hog. In the lan guage of the str"et, the farmers of Oivgon are overlooking a good thing." A BO.ID COMMITTEE. To avoid duplication of good jroails bills to go before the people through the initiative or by way of the legislature, as well as to avoid confusion in preparing such bills, Governor West has named a com mittee with one representative from each county, except Multnomah, which has a representation of five. There will also be included In this committee three members represent ing the State Grange, and the com mittee has been named the State Grange good roads committee. From reports the Governor has re celved a bewildering array of road laws will be submitted to the people at next general ejection by various organizations, and many requests have come to him to name a com niittee which can handle all this leg- islation and harmonize it so that the people will have one distinct law to vote upon that will be as nearly as possible an expression of the wishes of every county in the state, sum an actor is named as Morrow county's representative on this committee. From the experience the people of the state had at the last election in good road laws, this move on the part of Governor West is certainly to be commended, and out of this plan a law should be framed that will get at what the people want. They know that they want good roads; to get the right law to bring about this condition is a question. N' Notice to Creditors. Two sharp but heavy earthquake shocks were experienced in San Fran cisco on the afternoon of the 1st, and created considerable of a panic among the residents of that city. The dis turbance was felt at many points up and down the California coast, and was very marked at Carson City, Nevada. No damage was done at any of the places sending in reports, and outside of San Francisco, the people were little excited over the tremblor. Reports come through the daily papers of extreme suffering and many deaths throughout the East and Mid dle West from the excessive heat. Here in Oregon it is some warm, to be sure, but there is no suffering from the heat; we can all sleep good nights, providing our conscience does not hurt us, and health and reasonable prosperity is enjoyed by all classes of people. Oregon can certainly dish up the proper climate along with everything else that goes to make life worth living. Come to Oregon and be happy. IN THE COUNTY CO CRT OF Morrow County, Oregon. Real According to decision rendered by the Commissioner of the General Land Office, the decision of the local land office at La Grande has been re- ersed and the entries held for can cellation in the contest of the govern ment against Morrow county timber claimants. This case involves some twenty six claims now owned by the Northwest Timber Company, and known here as the Ayers-McSwords claims, and the Commissioner holds that the charge of fraud is proven. An appeal from this decision will be made to the Secretary of the Interior, ami this official may take another view of the case.
