Warren is now the ollector for the Y. M. C. A., and requests every one who has sub scribed to be prompt in meeting their obligations. Hunt him up at the parsonage, or he will call on you at your home. That was a jolly crowd at the parsonage laet Saturday night when about 25 people met to take part in the 30 tu wedding anniver- ary of the Rev. and Mrs. E. P. Warren. A sumptuous nuptial east was spread and many good things were left in the home. Some changes are being made in the parsonage and it will soon be made a beaut ful home. That the Czar of Russia will have a royal orchard in Southern Oregcn is the information given out by two nobles of his court, An. too Petroskovich and Peter Peter faof, who have just completed an inspection of the Pacific North west to locate an orchard. They decided to recommend the Rogue River Valley and are expected to -close negotiations just made for a tract near Medford. Reductions in grain tates tf about 12J "per cent from the in tenor to tidewater will go into ef fect on the rail roads of the North west on November 1, and will ef fect a very Urge saving to the wheat growers of the Inland Em pire. The reduction was ordered on the O. R. & N. lines by the Oregon Railroad Commission and on the Washington railroads by the commission of that state. On the present year's crop it is be lieved a saving of about $300,000 will be realized to growers by the lessened freight rates. Methodist Episcopal Church. Four years ago Weston Allen, a workman in the car shoos of the Northern Pacific Railroad cooniany at Tacoma. Wash., where he received $4 a day becaume the owner involun tarily of five acres of Yakima fruit land in the neighborhood ot Sunny, side, and through the iaiDortJnity of hia wife he abandoned his trade to become a farmer in a small way. He had acquired the land by loaning the monev neoessarv to buy it to the man who originally purchansed it. says a Yakima pacer. Mr. Allen confessed that he quit his trade with much doubt and reluctauce, because he feared that five acres would not make a farm sufficient to support his family. While in the city recently making his purchases for the season, Mr. Allen confided to a friend that he had made this year a little over $2200 from three acres of fruit on his five acre farm, devoting the other two acres to house room, chicken run, barn and garden. "I was never more surprised in my life," said Mr. Allen, "than when I discovered, even last year, that five acres of fruit land would make any family a nice, self sustaining home, and that the task of taking proper care of it is a snap. Why, I can do better than when 1 received from $4 to $4.50 a day without any investment at all. and then have plenty of time to enjoy life as I go along. This year I have more than 6 a day as net profit on my work and at times I wa3 really ashamed of myself for taking life sq easv. "I will add 40 acres to my farm this year, if I succeed in making the deal - for an adjoining tract. If not there, I will buy 10 acre somewhere else in the valley and develop it: then sell or lease the one I have now. My peach and apple trees averaeed me about $30 a tree and it cost me less than $8 to taae caie of them and market their produot. I chareed all of my mork and farm expenses against the fruit trees, but I raised a very nice garden and had vegetables to sell. My chickens, to which Mrs. Allen devoted her time successfully, turned in a handsome profit. I raised six pigs to marketable hoghood and sold four of them. I keep a cow and a horse, and yet. outside of the things sold from my garden and the hennery. I made over $2200 clear a year. The orchard will do better than that next year, if conditions are equally as good. "I have succeeded in interesting a number of my former neighbors in Tacoma. of whom over 100 worked in the Northern Pacific cai shoos. Many of them will be here next year, a few of them having already come and investigated for themselves. Every one ol them nas oeen pieasea wun the situation; two of them bought 10 acres each and the others will arrange their affairs to enable them to do likewise early in the spring.
