WASHINGTON LETTER Special Correspondence. At the present time the bureau of busiest institution in Wnshincton. It Is turninp: out paper money nt the rate of $1,000,000 n day, In accordance with the Alilrioh-Vivohuiil currency Mil nu - U10ll.lUn 1 L1KT I.-'IKIULV VI inn iiv,' , bank notes. The work is being done . scared, come along. Your pre6 both day and niprht. and the complete I ence (1U . our betterment only is force of the establishment is occupied J rn hn nlirhf li.iiip ahlfr As ntilcklv ns Willi t fit. the currency is being printed it is sent to various sections of the country. Emergency Bank Notes. In the new notes several changes are made over the issues of 1S82, the re- verse on the bills under the Vreeland bill being of a completely new design. The broad square has been stripped of its scroll work, and in the white space appear the large figures "1SS2-190S." In the ovals at the sides are pictures of George Washington and the Un-ited States capitol. The faces of the bills vill remain the same, witti the ex ception that the words "deposited with the United States treasurer at Wash ington" will be eliminated and the phrase "or other securities" substi tuted to follow the statement that "this note is secured by bonds of the Tnlted States." New Municipal Building. After four yeare of construction work the handsome white marble home of the District government at Fourteenth street and Pennsylvania nrenue, to be known as the municipal building, is completed and is ready for occupancy. The big structure will house the various branches of the local govern ment, and the duties performed for many years in the present official home of the District authorities in Louisiana avenue will henceforth be fulfilled in the new building. Cost Two and a Half Millions. ; Tossibly no edifice has been co:i , Btructed in the District during the present generation that has inspired more real interest and is the cause for more pride on the part of the citizens of the nation's capital than the new municipal building. It is considered ns handsome as any public structure In Washington and compares most fa vorably with any other municipal building in the United States. '. The building is of imposing appear ance. It is treated from an architec tural standpoint In columnar style throughout, the rear elevation being practically the same in design as the front. The columns extend on either side as well as on the front and rear. Jt is believed that in the future the rear of the building will be almost equally as prominent as the front 1 A Fine Recreation Ground. , Few if any of the latter day resb dents of the District of Columbia have failed to enjoy one or more of the fea tures of the park along the Potomac, its smooth wide drives, its new ath letic field, its shady walks, its wall butting right on deep water for the fishermen and its cinder paths for equestrians. Then, too, all lovers of out of door life in the capital find pleasure in anticipation of the greater improvements to come, when the park is extended below its present bound ary at Fourteenth street southwest all the way to the junction of the Wash ington and Georgetown channels, so that the entire southeastern front of the city will be a solid stretch of greensward, shaded by trees and main tained as a recreation ground for the public. Flats Transformed. And further comes the promise, forecasted in recently proposed legisla tion, contemplating the "open valley treatment" of the shores of Rock creek, that the whole system of Rock Creek park and Totomac park will be converted Into one great playground, affording some of the finest and long est drives of any park in any city in the world. Scores, possibly hundreds, of the citi zens of the District of Columbia re member the time when the present Po tomac park was nothing but a waste of fiats and swamp lands, its noisome expanse not only a blot to the south ern approach to the capital of the na tion, but a positive and ever present menace to the health of the commu nity. A Capital Goose. r One of the queer and frequent eights of Washington which in their mediae val bizarrerie recall Don Quizote or Ae rop's fables or Rabelais is that of a tall and stately goose calmly ambling down the avenue, close on the heels of its doting master, who is a waiter at Harvey's, the time honored restau rant of the capital. The ungainly fowl, unmindful of the traffic in the busiest part of the town, pursues his friend, often capped and aproned, with the fidelity of a secret service guard. The goose and the man are the great pst chums. The spectacle Is grotesque ud freakish In the extreme. Plan New Courthouse. Id a few days construction work will begin on one of the finest court buildings in the country for the Dis trict court of appeals. An appropria tion of $200,000 made by congress for this purpose became available July 1. For many years there has been a need of a separate building in keeping with the dignity of the court. In their present cramped quarters, in a email wing of the courthouse, the appellate court Judges virtually have been "camping out" The new structure will occupy a site In Judiciary square, between the Unit--d States courthouse and the pension office building and facing E street northwest Within a year It will be teadr for occupancy. In point of archi tectural design the building will be a modeL It will be of marble construc tion. CABL SCHOFIELD. Itcvivitl fleeting;. The levivnl meeting at the M. SHE WAS CARELESS. And So the Careful Husband Decided to Teach His Wife a Lesson. "My wife has a disagreeable habit of leaving her pocketbook in exposed places," said the man who was telling the story. "I bad cautioned her more than once that she would lose it if she wasn't more careful. '"I came downtown with her the other morning, and the first thing she did nfter boarding the car was to deposit her purse upon the car seat, while she relieved herself of the terrible sus picion that her hat wasn't on straight A movement of her arms knocked the purse on the floor, where it remained until I picked it up. "I rescued that purse no less than a dozea times before we reached the bargain counter that was the goal of my wife's ambition. "Events around a bargain counter occur with kaleidoscopic swiftness, and I soon found myself the sole guardian of my wife's purse, which lay before me on the counter where it had beep deserted by her In a mad rush for the other end of the counter. "To teach her a lesson I emptied the contents of the purse in my pocket and retreated to the edge of the crowd to await developments. "It wasn't long before my wife crowded her way out, triumphantly holding aloft a twenty-five cent cream Jug that Bhe had succeeded in buying for 49 cents. " 'I didn't know that they charged things here.V I began feebly. " 'They don't,' she answered. I have money left for three ice cream sodas and a strip of car tickets.' And she exhibited the contents of her purse to prove her assertion. "I nearly fainted when it dawned upon me that I had taken the contents from a purse belonging to some other woman. "I have no desire to retain possession, and if the woman who lost 79 cents, a postage stamp, three hairpins and a recipe for making angel food will call at my office she may have her prop erty." Detroit Free Press. Finished Him. "Yes," prattled the artless damsel, "I have eight brothers and four sisters. There were sixteen in mother's family and fourteen in her mother's. It's fun ny about our family. Now, my oldest Bister" "Maude," gasred the young man, "you mustn't take what I've been say ing to you seriously. I hope you er understand that It was only a flirtation and that when I asked you to become my wife I er well, you understand, don't you?" Through Foreign Eyes. Two foreigners were watching their first game of baseball. "Dot ras a dangerous game, yah?" said the German. "Eet must be, monsieur," replied the Frenchman.
