A bounty of from SI to $1.50 per coyote will be asked of the legisla ture of this state when it convenes this winter and the request will be backed up by not only the sheep, men of eastern Oregon, but by those of the Willamette valley as well, for the hill pest is already creating great havoo among the flocks of the western part of the state. It is estimated that the coyotes during the past year have done over $1,000,000 damage to the flocks of the state, and the sheepmen believe that the only way to exterminate the pest is to provide a bounty to make their killing worth while. In order to get the matter before the legislature the Oregon sheep commission in its annual report will embrace a recommendation of a bounty of $1.50 to be paid for each animal killed. It will point to the success with which that plan combatted the evil some years ago. The sheepmen of the state will also urge through their organiza tion that such a bounty be given. Sheepmen to Pay Half. Ond half of the sum paid, accord ing to the plan now under advise ment, will be paid by tbesheepmen through a special tax levied upon them for that purpose. This is in ine with tbe o d law. gon Under that system, according to Secretary Dan P. Smy the " of tbe Oregon sheep commission, the coy otes were practically exterminated, and just at the time the county bad ceased to be an expense of any im portance tbe law was repealed. As I tbe result the animals have in. creased until they are a plague greater than ever before in tbe state. For the first time in many years the valley woolgrowers are with tbe men of eastern Oregon in this mat ter. In Douglas county for in-1 stance the damage to tbe flocks during the past year has been very great even though the county has a bounty of $25 per animal and tbe growers have their places fenced against coyotes, but the wily ani mals come over tbe hills from east ern Oregon and by digging under the "'coyote proof" fences, have managed to do great damage. irielh4l-t Church.
