Vitriol water is death to the smut germ; but I have learned from many wheat growers in Mor row county that they do not use the vitriol as I would FUggest. We must admit that dry wheat in bags can be left uncovered and take much rain and not absorb enough moisture to prevent wheat from being merchantable, at least in this climate, and yet they expect every part of every kernel to be surrounded by vitriol water by five minutes immersion in a sack in a barrel. I siy jt will not do. Wheat in a zaii ivi a barrel is so closely packed that every kernel must, at some point, touch other kernels po close ly as to prevent the vitriol water passing between, and if at this point there is a emut seed kept from contact with the water it wou'd not be killed. By pouring wheat in the vitriol water every kernel is completely surrounded by water, especially if you btir it well. Build a trough, saj- fourteen or sixteen inches wide twelve inches deep and ten or twelve feet long. Place twenty to twenty five pounds of vitriol in aj crrain has? and nlace it in one end i l-b-'aS'int to take ol the trough. Fill trough with six inches of water. Four iu a sack of wheat, stir well, skim oil the white caps, straws and other re fuse. At one end of the trough place a drain board, scoop up the wheat and allow the snme to drain. tne water passing back into the trough. In this country we find very lit tle foreign substance iu the wheat in the way of wild ?eeds. One man can vitrol and skim more wheat in this manner than he could clean with a fanuiug mill and more than he could vitriol in a barrel and the wheat is left in rrood cot - diiion for tha drill in its passage down the tubes for seeding. And I would further suggest that the sacks in which the wheat is placed alter vitrioling should be immersed j ? . - i . ... . IJ Viu 101 water. AS tnere may De j west 0f ii.udman.
