HEPPNER, OREGON, THURSDAY, MAY 28. 1908 NO. 13 THE MASK TORN OFF ,ection of Persons, property and good morals snouia oe Kepi aiive ana eneci' It is necessary for all executive ive. necessary Salaried "Officials" Of the officers, and eepecial'y 'lie District At Anti-Saloon League Let the Cat Out of the Bag. The Rev. J. R. Knodell of Portland, one r f the many salaried "superintend ents" of the Anti-Saloon League, statd the other day that the local option elec tions thi year were only preliminary skirmishes. He said that the real idaa was to obtain prohibition for the entire state of Oregon in 1910, two years from now. That lets ihe cut out of the bag. lne people were assured four years torney, to act with great caution and discretion, so as prevent unnecessary expense to the county and state. The office of district attorney is necessarily an expensive one, and for that reason the incumbent should protect the tax payers in every possible way. Taxes are much too bigh ; there should be re trench men t in every department. It is the duty of the district attorney to ad vise all the executive officers as to what is legal, and to prevent them from doing that which is unlawful. In that ca pacity it is his duty to advise the county court in the expenditures, which the law imposes upon it. The taxes of Uma ago that the local option law was merely tilla county have been increased of late intended to protect residence districts years by the unlawful expenditures of against the encroachment of the saloon. 'Ve are not prohibitionists," cried the supporters of the bill. "We are only local optionists." To those who claimed that the local option law was merely prohibition in disguise, its sup porters presented an unbroken front. When taxed with the fact that their law was unfair they replied by asking the public to read it. As "the law was 28 panes in length the public would not bother itself by making a more careful investigation. very large sums cf money, for, which reason the taxpayers might, if tbey saw fit to resort to the courts, repudiate a large portion of the existing debt of Umatilla county. by this I refer to the voluntary crea tion of county indebtedness over the amount of if-i.OUG limited bv the consti tution ; ail of such indebtedness having been declared by the supreme court of this State to bs absolutely void, even in the hands of innocent purchasers. Voters have been fooled with this kind of frau dulent election long enough. Prohibition accomplishes nothing for real temperance or for morality. Bank ruptcy does follow prohibition and the United States census reports prove this jieyond a doubt, Here and there a pro hibltion lotVn 6r small community which has been fairly prosperous eyen in spite of prohibition. There are exceptions to all rules, but government figures, which do not lie, prove that prohibition is not only a mark of a stagnant community, but is a blight to a prosperous one. Prohibition in Oregon would cause 2500 buildings to become vacant and would throw out ot employment y.uiX) ballot? But it is 6aid we need the ballot of woman to aid us in government. But is it expedient? Will society be im proved by the granting of the ballot to women.' Will the better element of women come to the front as political workers and fill our offices, or will the worse? Which is the better elemeqiof women? The quiet, unassuming queens of our homes, our mothers Bisters, wires and sweethearts, or will politics be con trolled by the clubwomen? This is not at) Untried experiment. Four states have given the ballot to women uncon ditionally, and after 30 years of women's voting, politics has not arrived at the moral standard of our own state, in Wyoming, Colorado, Idaho, or Utah. But you say, "There are not as manV women as men in Wyoming." Yes, but in Utah women are so plentiful that sev en or eight of them club together ard To the voters of Morrow County : I am writing this letter to correct a few errors which we read and hear almost daily in regard to the principles represented by the socialists; and also to let you know that I am up before the people as an applicant for the govern ment job of assessor. uij you ever stop to tninK why it is that Uncle Sam never has to lose any sleep over the problem of finding men for the various jobs under his supervis ion? Is it not because Uncle Sam is such an agreeable fellow to work for, and that he gives more pay for less service rendered ? Welf we had just as well ad mit that such is the reason. Then such being the case, what would you think of a person who would ask for such a' job and at the same time be unwilling to accord to you the same privilege which be himself is seeking? You will find by referring to the platforms of the various parties to be represented at the coming election that the socialist party is tue oniy party that would create a govern i ent job for you also. They would do this by making public property out of everything that human life is depend ent upon. Individuals have already been trusted too far with certain neces ities of life, and with their free individ uality which some of you are so afraid that Socialism will destroy, have placed au almost prohibitive price upon them. Wouldn't y u sooner trust the people to deal in those things on which your life depends, with the incentive of profit re moved, than to bs at the mercy of an in dividual with selfish gain as the only motive? You have been told that the Socialist wants to divide up all the wealth of the country equally among the people. If you have been led to believe such a statement I ask you to investigate the Socialist literature and you will find the statement to be false. Socialism seeks to put a stop to you being compelled to "divide up" your hard earned wealth by givine three fourths of it to non-produc-inz capitalists. Socialism being founded upon the Gulden Rule, means justice to all. You are told that Socialism would de prive you. q( aU private property. This is false. Socialism would allow you to j retain all the private property that your labor would create; which would mean iour nmes me amount mat you receiye under this system, as you would not Christ's sympathies were with the poor and downtrodden ; so is the Socialist's. Christ said, "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for A Vigorous Denial of Campaign Falsehoods. Where is the prosperity in this. Remember a vote for local option now is a vote for prohibition in 1010. E., WARD. To tlte Voters of Hie Sixth IHvtrlct Pendleton, Oregon, May 2."., 1908. To the voters of Morrow and Umatilla counties: Having, at a late day, been nominat ed by individual electors of the 6tifJu dicial DiBtric , for the office of District Attorney, my name will appear upon the official ballot aa an independent candidate. For various reasons I have found it impossible to make any kind of a can vass, and 1 desire to state to the public, through the press, the particular pnn ciples upon which I stand. Indeed, there are not four states in our Union where poli tics is so corrupt as in the foyr states where women vote. CAN HIVE SPECIFIC INCIDENTS. I can give specific incidents with names, places and dates, where women, desiring to be assistant county clerks, etc., are sent from the candidates' office to the political boss to there offer her all at the shvine of a man, who, but for pol itics, would not be allowed to enter her borne. In every woman's suffrage state, the proyerb has had a doable emphasis that "Politics make strange companions." If you wish to prevent such conditions in Oregon, vote "No" on the woman suffrage amendment on June 1st. have to "divide up" with a non-produc ing class. So don't think that Socialism would rob you ; it seeks only to protect you. You have been told that socialism and anarchy are one and the same thin;. Anarchy centers all law in one's self; while Somlism recognizes law as an in strument coming from the will of the majority of the people. All laws today are not sanctioned by the will of the ma jority, hence are morally anarchistic in nature. The Supreme court renders many a decision contrary to the will of the people; and their monarchical rul ings have become so obnoxious that the people can hardly endure it any longer. The earth's natural resources on which we are dependent are almost w holly controlled by a few individuals against the will o the people. So don't allow anyone to teil you that Socialism is an archy until he can prove to you that minority rule is superior to majority rule. You have been told that the Socialist is an Atheist, and that he does not be lieve in the teachings of Jesus Christ. This assertion is also false. The corner stone of Socialism is the Golden Rale. Christ denounced usury; so uoes the Socialist. Christ taught the brother hood ot man ; so does the Socialist. degraded by depriving them of Ihe requi sites neceBBarj to a good healthy life. Christ was born of the poor. The So cialist movement is a world wide move ment born of the poor. Before getting very scared about that, take a look around you and see how capitalism is destroying the home. Capitalism com pels over 50 per cent of the families of the United States to live in rented homes. The last U. S. Labor Report, vol. 18, pp. 54 55, says that 81 per cent of the working class families have no tomes of their own, a'so that out of 400,000 homes in Few York City, less than 9000 own homes, and less than 14,000 have even a morteage home. In ISM), 2o per cent of the farmers of the United States were renters. In 1890 28 per ceut were renters. Id 1900, 35 per cent were renters. At that rate how jopg will it be until we are all renters? Socialism offors every man a home who is willing to work. And before they tell us that Socialism will destroy the hap piness in the home, they should first pick the mote out of their own eye. We seldom pick up a newspaper but what we see the account of a divorce or scaDdal among the so called "better class," who" prefer to 'dote their affec tions upoq dogs and cats rather than upon children. Capitalism denies to hundreds and thousands of men and women the privilege of marrying, there by encouraging prostitution and degen eracy. Have you anything to fear by a change in the present system of home buildiug? Socialism offers a home not only to yon and your wife, but also to your farm hand and the girl in the de partment store. The Socialist paints a picture of a home devoid of servants, with plenty of eood healthy children, with all evil iufltienees removed. Where the demon liquor will not enter because il will not ba manufactured owing to the profit beinsr taken off. A home where you can treat your neighbor as a brother, seven dars in the week, be cause your interests are identical. I have given you just a few of the many falsehoods scattered broadcast by the money mongers in regard to what the Socialists advocate and what So cialism would do if adopted. But amid the vigorous attack by the opponent. Socialism eoes marching on, and its triumph in the end is inevitable. Now, if you are not afraid to trust one of those 'Atheists," "Home Destroyers." "Anarchists," Undesirable Citizens," "Destroyers of Individuality," "Crazy,' (and a few other appellations by which we are known) Socialists as one of your public servants you know how to make it known on the first day of Jnne. A. S. AKERS. For another example : O. . Farns worth, mayor of Heppner(who has been one of the most aggressive enemies to my law-enforcement policies and wbo stands for a wide open town and county) has been circulating a report that I have been mixed op in Borne kind of a scandal in this city a most malicious and cow ardly falsehood. I pnblicly denounced him and made him eat it on the Main street of Heppner last Saturday (as I did two others of hi kind) at which time and place Mr. Farnswortb stated publicly that if I were defeated for sher iff in the coming election Heppner and Morrow county would be wide open again. Now then, Voters of Morrow county, you who believe in the righteous enforce ment of law, are vou willing to turn the reins of government oyer to men wbo advocate this kiod of a policy in this day of Regeneration and civic decency? Mayor Farnswo'th who two years ago last December bolted the citizens' ticket and headed the saloon man's ticket for mayor and city councilmen, but who were gloriously defeated (Farnsworth slipping into the mayor's office this last time because no one wanted to mix in an unpleasant fight with him) neerw V be very close to the leaders ot th& breaKing forces, am' is trying te- them dictate who pIirII preside ott & peace authorities of this county.
