For instance Hood River an eastern Oregon town near by, in 1904 closed its saloons. It found the coat of maintaining city government in a dry town very nearly as great as it was while ealoona were running, and in the general e!e tion ot 1906 it voted lor licensed sa loons. The country taxpayer may say that is a matter in which he has no concern that it is none ot bis affairs bow much the business men of the town are taxed but if he will stop to consider that every merchant, mechanic and professional man who iivei in town enters into bis expense account what he has to pay as taxes, and that in order to protect him self aeainst loss adds to the price he fixes on he goods he sells to the farmer or the service he may render his custo mers, therefore any additional burden he hos to bear comes indirectly out of those whom he serves, in the way of in creased prices, hence the farmer is in directly interested in keeping the rate of taxation even in the towns down to the minimum. Heppner and Lexington have been cited above bet ause of the fact that the other two incorporated towns of the county Hardman and lone did not collect a special city tax last year, How ever the former had two saloons paying $600 license each, and the latter two paying $700 each. Had they been de prived of the revenue from this source a high special tax would have been re quired in both these places. These are cold facts .that cannot be gotten around ; the expenses of city governments must be met, if not a por tion of it from license, then all must come trcm direct taxation upon proper ty. Reader, wa-i it ever your misfortune to find yoarpelf in a strange city or town of a colli winter day, with no friend to greet or 'velcowe, with no place to go except a stuffy, uninviting room in a boarding house or hotel? If so you can jrobab!y appreciate what the ea'.oon moans to the traveler who is away from Lome and friend, or who perhaps has neither. The saloon door is ever opr n to him, fiere he can form acquaintances and perhaps make lasting friends, there he can go when the rest of the world is clof e 1 to him. It possibly nay I e said lie eaid he bad better po nowhere than to tbe saloon, or that it he finds him-elf away from home and frien' s he had better lock himself op somewberealone, where evil temptations cannot be thrust in his way. But human nature craves companionship. It is unnatural to be alone. Men become unlike real men who do no: mingle with the world. So long as this is the case, why should the stranger be deprived of his 'club room?' Why should be be denied the right to associate with others and find acquaint ances, or at least a comfortable place to spend his time simply to satisfy the whim of some fanatic? He who does not approve of them is not com pelled to visit them, but however pro' nounced he may be against saloons, he should not take upon himself to "be his brother's keeper," but should be sufficiently liberal minded to grant to others the right to go where they will. If saloons are closed throughout the community will those people who are instrumental in closing them supply as comfortable places for the entertainment and reception of strangers as tbe Saloons affo-d? GOOD CLIP IN IDAHO Average Weight and Bet ter Quality. The Boise Capital News says of the proepects of a good wool crop and excel lent prices in Idaho this year: Reports received in the city this week from the various Bheep shearing camps in the southern part of tbe state on and tributary to the Oregon Short Line indi cate that the average clip is being made and that the wool is of a yery mu'.h finer quality than usual. This would indicate that sheepmen w,ill realize a good mark et price for their wool, regardless of the fact that there is a movement on foot by eastern buyers to offer a low price and stick to it. The first clipping, in which thousands of head of sheep were involved, took place at Bruneau and samples of the wool which were brought to this city in dicate the quality is very fine. Local sheepmen state that they have received reports from various other sheep camps of the northwest, which are to the effect that the same good quality of wool is being realized. Cooa Bay News: A few ehad were caaght by fishermen in the lower bay last week. As a general rule these bony finh don't run until May, and then Coos river is full of there for two or three weeks. The demand for them here is limited, most people preferring more fish and lees bones. OASTOIIIA. Bsan the t!a You H2W A'3! the v IK G. W. Maxwell was down from Hardman yesterday.
