President . A. Bryan, of the Wash ington State college, haa just received notice of his appointment as temporary president of the State Berkshire assocl ation, which is affiliated with the American Berkshire congress. Preai dent Bryan's appointment is the begin nlng of the organization of the Berk ehire association in the state of Wash ington. This association reaches through nearly all the states o' the union, and in the opinion of President Bryan, its coming into the state of Washington marks an important step in the livestock industry of the North west. Discussing the matter President Bryan said: "I believe the Berkshire association is one of the most active and successful livestock associations in the United States, and that its work in the North west cannot fail to produce good re sults. The Berkshire, is favored by many of the most prominent stock raisers In America, among whom I might mention Nick Gentry, of Se dalia. Missouri, who is the greatest breeder of Berkshire hogs in the coun try; Reuben Gentry, of Kentucky; Mr. Hood, of 'Hood's Sareaparilla' fame; and George Vanderbilt, of Aaheville, Tennessee. Among the most promi nent breeders of Berkshirea in the Northwest are the Ladd estate, of Port land, and Mr. Paul Clagstone, of Spo kane. I have raised Berkshire hogs on my Pussy Willow ranch near Pull man for the past ten years, and am thoroughly convinced of the desirable qualities of this breed. "It is proposed by the Berkshire association to conduct an active cam paign in the state of Washington, in favor of this breed of hogs, prior to the Alaska-Yukon exposition at Seattle. Then by the time of the exhibit, oar state organization will be able to get up a splendid exhibit, and we will show the farmers of the state what sort of an animal the Berkshire is when proper attention is given him. Yee, it is very likely that the state experi ment station will have a few Berk shires at the exhibit. At the present time we have some specimens of this breed that have been pronounced by the best Eastern experts as equal to anything in the United States." President Bryan today announced his appointment of the officers and direc tors of the state association who will work with him in getting the Berkshire association established in Washington. They follow: Vice president, Paul Clagstone, Spa. kane; secretary, J. H. Smith, Pullman: treasurer, W. D. Goodrich, Wauna. Directors: A. M. Stevens, Ellensburg; A. A. Somerville, Centralis; Plinny Shepardson, Castle Eock; W. W. Shields, Sprague; D. C. Dil worth, Spokane. impossible. "Do you find It difficult to dictate to your stenographer?"
