Local Notes. Iatea of Wool Sale. Heppner May 29; Jane 11-30. J. 0. Owen, the Hardpiaa sheep, man, was la tud city yesterday. Mr. Kelly, from Iowa, is bero at the bedside of his brother, Norman Kelly. Norman Kelly, who is sick at the Heppner Sanitarium, is show ing a little improvement. Miss Sadie Garrigues came up from Portland last week to assist Mrs. Luper in her millinery store. Lewis Kinney came up from lone Taesdayevening. Glen Burroughs, a popular stu dent of Whitman college, was a visitor in Heppner Saturday and Sunday. Otis D. Bullis and Miss Nora E. Srehhena. both of Hardinan. were married at the Star hotel in this city, yesterday evening, Judge J. P. Williams officiating. The Heppner Commercial Club has secured from the State Library Commission fifty volumes of books which are free to all. They will be kept at the Club and any respon sible person may take a book for a period of two weeks. The people of Heppner are cordially invited to take advantage of this free offer and secure the best books of all nature on the market. Library dys will be Tuesdays and Fridays, from 4 p. m. until 5 p. w. Clothes cleaned and pressed, called for and delivered. Mrs. Ed Reed, of Pullman, Wash, is here visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Rasmus, Rev. Orr, of the M. E. church, South, left for Weston Wednesday morning to remain over Sunday. Sheep shearers are arriving dai ly and if the good weather contin ues shearing will begin earlier this season than common. Jeff Neel is an entirely different man from what he was prior to March 21st, 1908. The cause of this great change in Jeff's career is the arrival at the Star hotel of a bouncing baby boy. He is a dan dy, according to his pa's way of thinking. Dr. W. V. Glaisyer and Dr. Pinkerton, of Pendleton, just came in from a tour of the northern part of the county. They failed to find any scab in that section of the county. Dr. Pinkerton returned to Pendleton this morning, but Dr. Glaisyer will remain until after the seaorj and will inspect the herds of Morrow, Gilliam, and Sherman counties. Mra, Cbas. A. Reed, of Hard man, died Monday aDd was buried Wednesday in the I. 0. O. F. cem etery of that place. Mrs. Reed leaves a husband and a family to mourn her loss. The Reedd are old time residents cf Morrow coun ty, having lived at Flardman for several years. Rev. Porter of this city officiated at the services. E. M. The banket social civen at the Commercial Club last Saturday evening was quite a success, Music was furnished by the Craw, ford orchestra and the sale of bas kets netted 841.00. Mr. and MreLafe Penlandgave a party to a large number of young people at their home Tuesday, March 25, in honor of their dangh ter Pearl's 17th birthday. Various games were played and piano se lections rendered during the even ing. Refreshments were served. Mrs. Penland was assisted by Mistresses W. A. Richardson, Frauk Hale, and J. McFernn. Miss Pearl received many beautiful presents. There were fortv guests present. Mrs. Celsus Keithley was ten dered a very complete surprise Tuesday evening March 24, the oc casion being her 29th birthday. The .surprise was arranged by Mra. Clvde Wells and Mrs. Jeff Jones. They were assisted by Miss Leah Minor. When the guests arrived at the Keithley home about eight o'clock thev fonnd Mrs. Keithley in a com fortable house dress calmly mend ing stockings. Piffo was played. Mrs. L. E. Cohn secured the fewest. lobsters and won the prize, a beautiful China cup and Baucer. The con solation, a small picture went to Mrs. Jeff Joints. Huelat Mrs. Sybil McSwords, of Boston,. eutertained the Five-Hundred Club at the home of Mra. V. R. Irwiu7 Thursday afternoon, io one of the prettiest parties of the season. The large reception hall and front rooms of the house, where the card tables were placed, were artistically decorated in pink and white. Streamers of pink crepe paper extended from the chande ib'rs to various parts of the rooms. targH vnses of pink carnations -idorned each table, and the whole house whs brilliantly lighted both with electricity and numerous pink candles. The door was opened by Master Ellis Irwin, clad in white, and the guests were received hy Mrs. McSwords and Mrs. Irwin. The dressing-room wps presided over by little Anne Roberts, dain tily gowned in pink Bilk. In addition to the regular mem bers of the club, Mra. McSwords entertained an extra table for Mistresses Eleanor Cameron, Gil man, Spencer, and Miss Josephine Cameron. The first prize, a large braes tray, was captured by Mies Mary Farns wortb, while Mrs. Young was the lucky winner of the booby prize, a pot of genuine "Boston Baked Beans." The prize for the extra table, a pitcher in' the Dutch ware, was won by Miss Josephine Cam eron. Refreshments, consisting of Bos ton baked beans, brown bread and coffee, ice cream and cake, were served by Misses Leah Minor Lena Gilmarj, aud Josephine Cameron. Those present were; Mistresses L. Bisbee, IYtivn, II. J. ; Matlock, Lucas, Hyndk Young, Conser, Cohn, Irwin, Redfleld, Patterson, Hal leck, Koberle, Jones, Cameron, Gilman, and Spencer ; Misses Farnsworth, Minor, Lena Gilman, and Josephine Cameron.
