Hunter, whose death occurred at Lexington Tues day evening January 21st, was born io London, England, Mav 28, 1834. He received his medical education at Edinburgh and Glas gow Medical colleges. 8oou after leaving college he received a com mission as surgeon in the' English army and was sent with his regi ment to the Crimean war where he served three year. Shortly before going to tbe front who uis regiment ne marriea an estimable young English lady. On his return he found that his wife had died, nearly two years before, leaving a daughter. The Doctor had had no news from home and knew nothing of bis wife's death, or the birth of a daughter. That daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Smoother, is now living in Oakland, Califor nia. He came to the United States about 45 years ago and first settled iu Nevada, afterwards moving to California where be served several years as deputy coroner of San Francisco. He was one of tbe founders of Cooper Medical Col lege and was demonstrator of an atomy in that institution for sever al years. On account of ill health he left the Bay City and came to Southern Oregon where he prac ticed his profession for several years. While in Sau Francisco he was married to jIiss May Tenuy on September 10th, 1872. There were six children as a result of this union. Three sons, Harry, who is secretary of tbe Portland Manu facturing Co., of St. Johns, Ore.: Dr. Frederick, a rising young phy sician of the Iloquinm, Wash., hospital; Montie, the youngest son is a student of the Lexington pub lic school; and three daughters. Mrs. John Goodman, of St. Johns, Misses Pearl and Ruby,' who are teachers in the Hoquiam public school. Dr. Hunter moved to Lexington two years ayo where be practiced his profession. During his resi dence in Lexington be made a num ber of warm frienJs. He was a member of Mammoth Lodge No. 87, A. O. U. W.f at Coos Cay, Oregon. Tbe remains were shipped tr Portland Thursday and funem! services were conducted at tL chapel of the Portland Cremator ium bv Rev. John Dawson, pastor of the Episcopalian church. Im- mediately after tbe services tbe bodv was placed in the furnace and cremated, according to the wish of the Doctor. The good people of Lexington did all within their power to com fort tbe widow and son, and all joined in words of condolence for the bereaved. C. O. Huelat Heppner Illg-1 School lloya Won A double header basketball game was pulled off in the Club gvm last Friday night and both games were lively contested. , Tbe first- game was to have been between tbe "Club Kids" and t team of youngsters from Lexington but the little fellows from our neighboring town failed to put in an appearance, so a team was picked np from tbe local town boys. The "Club Kids" won an easy victory with a score of 25 to 4. , Tbe main game was immediately called following the preliminary, The teams contesting were the Lexington and Heppner High schools and resulted in a victory for the latter. The game was rougher than necessary, but was full of life and the spirit of good fellowship pre vailed at all times. Following is the lineup of play and the score: . Lexington Beymor, C, 2; F. Mnnkers, forward, 2; B. Mnukers, forward; Baney and Thornburg, guards. Total score, 4. HeppDer Guards, Gilliam, Al va Jones, 3; center, Turner, 4; for wards, Glen Jones, 6, b'mead, 6. Total score, 19. H. of I. District Convention. Last Monday evening an affair long to be remembered by the Knights of Pythias of Doric Lodge No. 20. was held in their Castle hall in this city. The event wras district convention composed of the lodges from Lone llock, Spray, Condon, Arlington, Fossil, and Doric Lodge No. 20, and was i success in every wa'. There was a goodly share of vis itirg Knight present, 5 tbe larger delegation being from Lone Rock, ana an eutnusiHstic meeting was held. Grand Chancellor Wall and G. K. of K. b. Stinson were present and assisted in the ceremonies. Talks along the line of Pjthianism by these gentlemen were well re. ceived and had tbe result of briog. ins; out the true Ivnightly spirit A candidate was given both the second and third degrees and at tbe conclusion a clam feed was in duller! in by all present. Doric Lodge is one of the strong institutions of Morrow county and has a large 'membership composed of our best citizens from every sec tion of the couuty. Marquardsen's Department store has been in a chaotic condition for tbe past week owing to a change in store arrangement. We can heartily add that we think tbe same to be much improved, and are glad that Heppner has added one to the list of enterprising men.
