It appears to the Gazette that the people of Orecou are noj absorbing enough of the sentiment that ia comiug from the Portland Commercial Club. The Portland organization is composed ol far seeing basinet men who are working for Portland, it is true, but in workiug for Tort- land they are trying to make Ore gon greater for Portland without a prosperous and good state would amount to little indeed. Portland is spending money and asking for the co-operation of the whole Btate but what are we doing? "We make especial reference to the people of Morrow couuty. Now what is the matter. Surely the people here 6hou!d be interested In their own welfare. We have a great county. No question of it when we come to think over the actual conditions. The territory within the limits of Morrow county from the Columbia river to the .southern line joining Grant covers distance of 75 miles, with an average width of 35 miles, and etill with this territory almost half as large as some of the kingdoms oi the old world we haven't enough population for a good sized country village. The fact that we are isolated and handicapped by lack of railroad facilities can only be remedied in time, but our lack of enthusiasm and proper appreciation of what we actually have can be remedied immediately. One of our great drawbacks is the fact that we have too many knockers and not enough boosters. Take for instance Hood River. Hood River people are united. They pull together. They have fruit to sell. They have a union. 2Jy systematic methods of boosting they sell their fruit for more money , than anybody else. They sell their land for $400 to S1000 an acre and then they talk about it and give reasons why their land is worth it. Hood Eiver this year shipped 55, OOO crates of strawberries valued at $150,000. This item was published in every newspaper in the northwest and every man who wanted to grow strawberries wanted to go to Hood River. Morrow county has wheat, wool and stock and a small empire to eell. Morrow county this season chipped out 90,000 head of sheep that sold for $180,000. Have you thought of the tact that this was $30,000 more than Hood Elver's atrawberry crop sold for and that it was not bad money either. Bat vtho said anything about it or thought anything about it. Not the people of Morrow county. Surely we cannot expect outside people to placard and exploit this fact if we care nothing about it. We handled the modest item of 2,500,000 pounds of wool worth half a million dollars, but this was not enough to say much about Now we have a wheat crop coming on that will be worth in the neigh borhood of three quarters of a million but who is going to say anything about this. And we have only about 5,000 people. The most solid foundation and the beEt advertisement that ever went out of Morrow county is the fact that Winnard Bios, are now harvesting 400 acres of wheat that is going oj Dusneia to me acre M. J. Devin has harvested 100 seres of wheat that went 40 bushels to the acre and other large yields are so common that comment is thought to be unnecessary. It is a fact that Morrow county wheat lands are selling from $15 to $30 per acre. Bat how are the ibousands of people who are look, ixg for such lands going to know 'hat Morrow county lauds are forth .this money. Tell them about these wheat yields. Tell them about our stock, wool, alfalfa, our splendid climate tnd our great opportunities and -idvautages where a mau can get a home and pay for it with one or two crops. These are facts that we need not be ashamed of. Say, what is the matter with the Heppner Commercial Club, our Development League and the people generally. How many Morrow county people have written to a friend in the East telling them about the cheap colonist rates to get out here. We have right here in the Gazette office right now several thousand copies of a well written pamphlet with an interesting story j nbout Morrow countv. Let us send them out Let us do a little work for our own interests. Don't buy your vehicles of the traveling peddlers. Don't send to the cheap department stores for your merchandise but buy our goods here in Morrow county and you will save a lot of money in the end. If you do not stand by your own private business vou cannot succeed. What can be gained by keeping our towns and the county at a standstill. GOOD BANK SHOWING (Continued from page one.) Natter and A. Ayers, directors, are all old residents' of Morrow county and are all men of large in terests who have been closely identified with the growth of the county, On the 26th of last month the original charter issued for 20 years expired, and the bank has been granted a new charter to cover another period of 20 years, under the National Banking laws. The bank starts off under the new charter more prosperous and doing a better business than any ime in the history of the institution. Recently the surplus was in creased from $12,500 to $20,000 making the actual working capital $70,000. Hlgb Prices are Paid far Summer Varieties. , HOOD RIVER, Or., Aug. 9. The first Bale of this year's Hood River apples is reported by the Apple-Growers' Union which yesterday disposed of fonr cars of Graveneteins and Kings to Page & Son, of Portland, for 8150 per box. As a car contains about 600 boxes, the sale amounts to 2400 boxes. The price obtained is said by H. M. Huxley, manager of the Union, to be the highest ever received for apples of these varieties, being 50 cents more per box for the Graveneteins and about 20 cents more for tbe Kings than was obtained last year. These apples are the earliest varieties that are shipped from Hood River and have always been sold to the local trade until last season when tbe experiment wsi tried of sending several cars of them to Europe. Tbe shipment proved suc cessful and the prices obtained were the highest ever paid for earlv apples until this year whea Page & Son have taken them at what would be considered a good figure for a number of varieties of Winner fruit. Growers liok npon this eale as in dicating a high price for lite apples coupled with the fact that more Eastern buy-rs have entered the far Western markets than ever before. Firms in cities that have never comj eted for fruit on the Coast, including Philadelphia, Pittsburg and New Orleans, are this j ear endeavoring to get consignment. People all over the state are hungry for more details of the colonist rates. Letters are arriving from all sections of tbe state, asking for exact rates from different points throughout the United States, to Oregon. From Kansas City and other Missouri River points, St. Paul, Dulath and Winnipeg, the rate is $25, from Oklahoma City and St. Lonis $30, Chicago $33, Buffalo $42.60, Cincinnati and Louisville $33, DesMoines $29, Indianapolis $35 85, Boston $40.90 New York $50, Pittsburg $42, Memphis $37.50, Birmingham, Alabama $44 50 Each ticket is $2 50 less than when bought to points east of Umatilla. The rates given above about cover almost the entire country, and are the same proportionately from all smaller stations Keep in mind that tickets must be bought reading to your station. Property within two miles o Ontario that five years ago could have been purchased for $50 an acre and the unimproved land around it for less than half that amount is now commanding $200 an acre, says the Democrat.
