Taylor of rendleton, who U close studeut of ecoooinic and lolhical Questions, says upon hia m. return from an extended visit in the east that the preponderance of Hmtiment seems to be ''for Roose velt" for president And why not? He says that the substantial conied interests of the east, all of those not speculative and predatory, are for Roosevelt and that the working classes, which are now enjoying unprecedented prosperity, exeeptiutj, of course, a few leadiog fijitators, are for Roosevelt. In the east, as here, the great middle class of people are for lioosevelt, and from every indica tion the next republican national convention will be btainpeded by lioosevelt delegates until the presi dent will be forced to accept enother term. There is more reason for his election now than ever before. Hia great work is not half done. Panama needs his vigorous direction. The public land ques ilan needs his aggressive policy for b few years longer, and Harriman nd his gang of corruptionists and i iSeljs and his "army" all require a iBooaerelt policy for a few years No matter how well qualified a new president might be, he could attt take up the Roosevelt policy fin the midst of the work. Roosevelt iJbaa his forces organized, has his "work in hand, has his policy out )insd and no other man can com. U)iet6 his task as well as he. For beee reasons, Roosevelt should be the logical choice of every pro- gressive voter, regardless of politi cal affiliation. East Oregonian. rORTLASD, Me., Aug. 5. Com raander Robert . Aeary left here today (or New York, whence be will sail in few days on an expedition to the North Pule. Commander Peary said today : "From New York I shall go direct to Sidney, C. B., where I shall coal, and there wi 1 be no stops on tbe way, ss I have no time to lose. "My crew this time will be practically the same as on my last rrip. Captain Kobert Jiartlett is to command the Roosevelt. I am prepared to make everv effort to reach tbe Pole. If I do succeed next Summer, I shall stay ove a year. If I do not succeed, I shall stay one year later. I am taking along everything for a three year's trip." Commander Peary, giving some details of Ids plans said : "John Murphy, my old boatswain, is to be with me again. I am to have W ardwell, my old chief engineer. Hobs G. Ma rvin, of Buckcport, is to be mv resistant, and he will be the only Maine member of the party. I am to have a new surgeon. There are several ap plications for the position, but as yet no one has been chosen. 1 will settle that when I get to New York " Asked if he expected to reach the Pole this ti me, Commander Peary said: . , ... a man woo uas naa an experience in the North knows that to say be will do a certain thing up there is madness. I have learned many lessons from mv other trips and I shall profit by all my experience. What I shall fl nd at the Pole is a question that cannot be answered uutil I have reached it." Asked if he bad ample funds for carrying on the expedition, Commander Perry replied : "I will say one thing, and that is that the delays in repairs on the boilers of the Roosevelt have been and are now worrying me a great deal more than the money with which to finance the expe dition." Commander Peary appeared today to be in rugged health and was full of enthusiasm for the trip. PRODUCTS OF ONE TOASTER MIND Standard Oil Company Most Perfect machine 01 Intorost To ttfomon. A special dis patch to the Tribune from Washington cays: Japan and the United States propose to demonstrate to each other and to the world their mutual desire to maintain lose and friendly relations. The dem nslration is to take tbe form of nego tatims for the removal of alt differ- crjces which Lave arisen between them Jlb a result of linvestiaati ne in Asiatic immigration conditions which Secre tary of Commerce and Labor Straus and the Japanese commissioners are mak ing, tbe two governments will be in a positron to approach tbe settlement of be grave exclusion question with better appreciation of each other's ne cemities and embarrassments. The Japanese Ambassador, Viscount Aokr, has given the Administration to understand that this government is op poeea to pelagic sealing, whicn means it does not countenance in any way tbe poaching operations of Japanese seal nor will it tolerate a like operation in Japanese waters by American seal ers. Beyond these two matters there are no differences of any ma trial con sequences to be adjusted. The question which is most difficult cf settlement is that of immigration .Although a delegation of business men from California cs.me to Washington to u'ge the President to take action toward lowering tbe bars against .Asiatic immigration, there is no doubt orb an action is impossible at the jresent time. Eventually, in the judg ment cf the President, all the immigra tion restrictions will be removed. As fje pointed out in conversation with the Japanese, 50 yeirs ago tne litter re fused to admit Americans into their country. Today Americans do not ad mit Japanese. Standard Oil A synonym of financial hypnotism is the pro duct of one master mind. John D. Rockefeller and his associates have evolved from a beginning of nothing the moat complete, most perfectly organized and ex travagantly successful piec8 of business machinery the world has ever known, an organization which leaves the East Inda Company, a marvel in its day, a mere bagatelle. Tbe Standard Oil Company faced a master for the first tima in its career of 41 years when it was haled before Judge Landis and mulcted to the full extent of the law. From the tima four young men joined resources of less than $100,- 000 in the formation of the original Standard Oil Company to the last dividend-declaring period of 1907, which marked the distribution of nearly $50,000,000 in profits for less than one year, Standard Oil has conquered all that stood in its way. mastering all obstacles, relegating the law of supply and demand to the dead letter statutes and sweep ing all before it through the very force of its matchless system of business organization. Riversidft, Cal., Aug. 3. -In an address delivered tonight before the Chamber of Commerce, James Garfield, Secretary of the In terior, alluded to tbe fine imposed upon the Standard. Oil Company at Chicago today. In the course of his speech he said: "The decision and fine are the end of a long fight and will teach people of this country thatjno man, big or little, is above the law. The Standaid Oil Company and others like that great corporation have gone ahead on the theory that they were so powerful that they could do things the ordinary citizen could not." ' t Asked if the prosecution could collect the fine, Mr. Garfield replied: "You may be assured we can. There are 10,000 more counts hanging over thecn, in which similar fines cau be administered."
