Local and Personal Notes Misa Helena Rhfia was a pas 86Dger for Pendleton, Monday. Thomas Graham, of Hardman, was a Heppner visitor yesterday. Lexington creamery butte.r on sale at Marquardsen's Department Store. Phil Metschan, Jr. wag shaking hands with friends in Heppner this week. Geo. Perry ame in from Rock creek Monday end left Tuesday for Portland on a brief business trip. The Odd Fellows of this city will celebrate their anniversary on tomorrow evening. A program is arranged for the occasion. Kay Fairchild is in Grant county buying hogs. He has bought sev eral hundred head in the vicinity of Monument and Long creek. Mrs. A. L. Ayers returned Sat urday from Pittsburg, Pa, Mrs. Ayera went to visit her mother who was very sick but is now much improved in health. Jack Matlock and Tom Gilfillin are in Grant county receiving sheep which they bought there the past winter. The sheep bought are in the vicinity of Canyon City. Mrs. Gertrude Parker left on yesterday morning's train for Day ton, Wash., where ehe will visit with a sister before returning to her home at Cove, Union county. Theme of 5 minute sermon to boys and girls at 11 a. m., next Sunday at the M. E. church will be"HowJto be Untruthful," and the theme of the morning sermon will be "Jacob before Pbarob," and in the evening "Wages or service?' Welceme. County School Superintendent S; L Strattoa-has sent oat notice inviting the teachers to attend the local institute to be held at Lex ington, Saturday, April 27, at 10:30 o'clock. Putnam is called to Hepp ner, by the illness of his wife who is visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. A. Andrews, of that place. Coos Bay Harbor. M. B. Haines is fixing up tb Star restaurant on May street and will have" the same open to the public immediately. Mr. Haines is a thorough restaurant man and will conduct his place in an up-to. date manner. It will be run in connection with tbe Star hotel. Jeff Neel is making some ex pensive aod valued improvements to the Star hotel. A modern sep tic tank has been installed, and uptodate patent water closets will take the place of the old ones with a good sewer system to Willow creek. Mr. Neel has thoroughly renovated the hotel and has added much new material in the way of carpets and furniture. A. J. Cook recently butchered a hog that dressed 717 pounds. Tbe hams after beiDg cured weighed 92 pounds and were tfold for 17c pfir pound. At tbe present prices for pork this hog would bring in the neighborhood of 870. Many farmers are buying their bacon at from 16c to 20o per pound. Mr. Cook says there are no hogs to speak of in Morrow county. The entertainment given in Roberts' hall on last Saturday evening by the Heppner high school, assisted by Chas. R. mo Calley and Mrs. sr. B. iietzler was a success in every particular. Mr McCalley wasHhe principal feature of the evening's entertainment and his boIos were well received. A chorus of high school pupils ren dered two songs to their credit Katie Neville's recitation, the "Burglar Alarm" was exceptionally good and showed fare elooutiofiary ability. "The Dyspeptic Goat" by Lulu Campbell in German dialeci brought forth roars of laughter md applause, as did ''The Pant my Mamma Makes" by little Pan Gamble. Blanche Cartel's recita .ion was of merit Mrs. Metzler and Mrs. Win card acted as accom panists. Tbe entertainment was given for the benefit of the high school, tbe proceeds to be used in graduation exercises. This order was duly obeyed by tbe trusting nnd loyal citizens, the general appearance of the city vastly improved, and some unsight ly heaps of rubbish are still wait ing for the scavengei to convey them to their long sought and final place of sepulture.
