Two men are now en gaged in mining the coal which will be hauled down by wngon and team. Geo. Vincent came in Sunday from his Butter ceek ranch. Mr. Vincent came in to receive a lot of cattle which were purchased by Wm. Matlock. Mr. Vincent baB already commenced feedinc beef cattle on alfalfa. 11 o will feed 300 head this fall and winter. Tom Matlock is the proud Dossaesor of one of the tine&t buggy robes that was ever brought to lleDpner. The robe"was made from the skin of Galloway cow and ii a beauty. The robe is a present f om W. Dan Stalter came in from the Mayflower mines in the Greenhorn district, Monday having been three dava on the road on horseback. Dan is a well pleased man. lie has good reasons to feel well over the results of his labor. For six years he has been working the present property which be has now in shape to take out the yellow metal. Fees earned in the clerk's office for the month of September just passed, show a great increase over the corresponding month for the year 1003. Last year, the September earn ings were 8104.45. He will ship 25 cars of old ewes on the 5th of this month to Nebraska where they will be fed on sugar beet pulp. Even with the disadvantage of the short run Mr. Stalter is highly pleased. He has proven that the ore from the Mayflower group con tains gold and in paying quanti ties. In evidence of this he brought out five bars, real gold bricks. Along with the bars of free gold Mr. Stalter brought out a quantity of concentrates for assay. He went to Portland yesterday morn inc for that purpose. As soon as Mr. Stalter comes back wards. fmm Portland h will an l-inrlr in I J. S. the mines and will run until winter. A number of Heppner people are interested in the Stalter min ing proposition. The ore which the test has proven to be of value, is located so that it can be easily and cheaply worked.
