Tipping Is rapidly becoming a nation
al evil. It began with the payment of
email gratuities to waiters in restau
rants and hotels. In this form it was
an importation from Europe. Of
course, the waiter ought to serve the
customer faithfully without being
bribed to do tho work which he had
been hired to perforin, but the custom
has grown to such an extent that un
less one fees lie is sure not to obtain
good service. lie submits, therefore,
to the imposition, as the less of two
evils. The practice has spread to such
an extent that the man who blacks
your boots, that helps you ou with
3-our coat, that hands you your hat,
that tells you the way, that brings you
a glass of water, that shaves your face,
or cuts your hair, expects a gratuity in
addition to the pay which he receives
for performing his work.
The tipping evil has gone higher up
than this, and Is now beginning to
spread itself through all the depart
ments of business and politics. It is
the duty of the legislator to pass good
laws, but he sometimes has to be tipped
to do it. It is the duty of the police
man to protect property from robbery,
but he often has to be tipped to do it.
If you want to sell a line of goods
It is even necessary to tip the butler,
the farm superintendent, the purchas
ing agent. L)o you want a switch con
nection or a prompt supply of cars
from a railroad? It may be well to
tip the railroad official with a gift of
money or of stock.
It is about time to check this tip
ping abuse. Let us stop it first high
up, and work down to the bottom.

B rough gummed up many facts about
the use of Iron by the ancients. Inter
esting In the light of recent metallurgi
cal practice Is a part of an Iron tool
found in the Great Pyramid, because it
contains not only nickel, but also com
bined carbon, showing that It Is not of
meteoric origin. Under a sphinx at
Karnak an Iron sickle was found. At
Delhi there still exists an Iron pillar,
50 feet high and 16 Inches In diameter,
made up of 50-pound blooms welded to
gether. This pillar, Mr. Iirough sug
gested, may me regarded as "the doyen
among products of the heavy iron In
dustry." The use of iron and steel In
China has been traced to the year 2357
B. C. The Japanese are said to have
had a curious method of making steel.
They burled forged Iron In marshy
ground, and after eight or ten years,
through some alchemy of nature, It
came out steel.
Interesting experiments have recent
ly been made at the Kew Observatory
near London on the effects of the elec
tric currents produced in the earth by
systems of the
British metropolis. The delicate mag
netic instruments of the observatory
are affected by the currents. Metallic
plates buried In the ground were con
nected with a photographic recording
apparatus, and the tracings recorded
by the Instrument formed a picture of
the time-table of the London Central
Railway, although the nearest point of
approach of that line Is six miles from
Kew. Even accidental breakdowns oc
curring on tho traction line were Indi

railway tunnels of unprecedented mag
nitude are now under discussion. One
of them, which appeals strongly to the
Imagination if It does not enlist much
sympathy among pactlcal men, Is Mon
sieur do label's plan for tunneling
Bering Strait to connect Siberia with
Alaska. The author of this plan ex
plained It before a large meeting of tha
Navy and Military Club at St. Peters
burg recently. Bering Strait, be said,
is about 3SVj miles broad and 157 feet
deep, but It has two Islands so situ
ated that the tunnel could be divided
Into three sections of about 12 miles
each. The other project Is older, and
relates to tunneling the English Chan
nel between lover and Calais. French
engineers have recently been studying
the enterprise anew. The distance Is
about 2.Tj miles. The work would bo
relatively eay because the tunnel would
run through chalk.
