C. L. Marlatt, of the Department of
Agriculture in Washington, has pre
pared a statement as to the loss by in
sect pests in the United States each
year. He notes that the losses each
year in all the plant products of the
soil, both in the growing and in the
stored state, together with those in
live stock, exceed the entire expendi
ture of the national government, in
cluding the pension roll and the main
tenance of the army and the navy.
Placing the value of these prod nets at
$5,000,000,000, per year, he notes an
annual shrinkage due to insect pests of
fully 10 per cent in many cases of 50
per cent; bat at 10 per cent, $500,000,
000 is "the minimum yearly tax which
insects levy upon the products of the
farm." This does not include loss to

John Walker, an English Drunrertat,

In the nineteenth century the cen
tury in which so many wonderful things :
were done the fourth step In the de
velopment of the match was taken. In
1S27, John Walker, a druggist In a
small English town, tipped a splint
with sulphur, chlorate of potash and
sulphid of antimony, and rubbed It on
sandpaper, and it burst into flame. Tho
druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical
match, the kind we use
to-day. It Is called frlctlon-chemlcnl
because it Is made by mixing certain
chemicals together and rubbing them,

was not a good one. It could be lighted
only by hard rubbing, and It sputtered
and threw fire In all directions. In a
few years, however, phosphorus was
substituted on the tip for antimony,
and tho change worked wonders. The

little rubbing, and It was no longer
necessary to have sandpaper upon
which to rub It It would Ignite when
rubbed on any dry surface, and there
was no longer any sputtering. This
was the phosphorus nintch. the match
with which we are so familiar.
After the Invention of tho easily
lighted phosphorus match there was
no longer use for the dip-splint or the
strike-a light The old methods of get
ting n blaze were gradually laid asldo
and forgotten. The first phosphorus
matches were sold at 2." cents a Mock
a block containing 144 matches and
they were used by but few. Now a
hundred matches can le Nuight for a
cent. It Is said that in the United
we use about 150,l0.(W.t0 matches
a year. Tnls, on an average. Is about
five matches a day for every person.
