Thursday Jan. 25, 1906 Charles M. Schwab, the steel magnate who will soon open tip his modest 16,000,000 cottage in New York, hae shocked the "400" of New York by making the an nouncement that he ia goiDg to in vite all of hie friend from Brad dock, Pennsylvania. He will open the mansion with a regular old fashioned hoedown and states that no dress suits are wanted, just the Sunday store clothes like they use to wear in Braddock, hob nails and all. He's going to have a regular "hog killin' " of a time. Charlie's economy in only spend $6,000,000 for a little home shows that he is likely to be a rich man some day. The Gazette is receiving much literature and many letters from the ladies who are working so hard for the woman suffrage move ment in Oregon. On the other hand jqt ftbpn$ jts many letters and as much literature is being re ceived from the Oregon State As sociation opposed to the extension of saffraga to women. The latter movement is also entirely in the hands of earnest working ladies. Now what in the name of common sense are we going to do. The Gazette certainly wants to please the ladies but how are we going to work for woman's suf frage and against it all at the same time, It is a mighty hard position to be plaoed in. a2M Senator Fulton's maiden ap pearance in the senate in a speech of two hours created an excellent impression. Mr. Fulton brought up the subject of rate legislation unexpectedly and with much force stirred up a big debate. The fol lowing is taken from the Washing ton Post and is a portion of an article which occupied a column and a half: "Rate legislation held the boards in the Senate yesterday. Iho question was brought forward unexpectedly, and from a source been guarded. As tjpic was sprung-, bolt upright and Every Senator in turned in tention to that had not poon as the the Senate eat took notice, the chamber bis eeat and gave at tach speaker in turn with an intensity of interest much like that manifested by jurors at a murder trial. The debate was provoked by Mr. Fulton, of Ore gon who made his first appear ance, so to speak, before the Sen ate, and who, by the way, created an excellent impression. He offered an amendment to the Dol liver bill, giving the coui ts power to modify orders of the Interstate Commerce Commission when such orders are confiscatory. Mr. Fulton proceeded to explain his proposi tion, and almost in a twinking Messrs. Foraker, Bailey Spooner and Nelson were at it hammer and tocgs. It seemed at one time that the whole question was to be opened up and seriously debated. Mr. Fulton's speech was interrupt ed eo frequently and at such con siderable length that he was com pelled to occupy the floor for more than two hours. He brought on one of the finest skirmish fights of which the senate has yet beeu the scene on the question of rail road reform." Heppner is a growing town and the qaestion of a system of sewer age ia becoming more and more prominent In fact, the day is not lar distant when it will be absolute ly nf ce3sary for the people to act upon this qaestion. It is, indeed, a difficult problem, bat conditions are appearing that will force action to meet the unavoidable. It ia high time to commence to think about methods of procedure. Heppner's greatest obstacle Jis lack of water supply. There are two ways to obtain the necessary amount of water, both being ex pensive. The water can either ba brought down in pipes from the springs of ripper Willow creek, or a supply of well water, it is thooght,"can be secured by sinking a deep well. While the first way is the surest, both are problems that would necessitate careful and thorough investigation in order to arrive at a conclusion that will be profitablefor the people concerned. It is unnecessary to state that in all densely populated areas, a proper regard for the health of the community requires the re moval of solid and liquid refuse. Under present conditions we have no 6ewers and the sewage is run into cesspools where it decom poses, contaminating tiie eartn, air and water and becomes the disseminator of disease. To start with it would not be necessary for an elaborate system, however, it would be necessary to make provison for the ex tension and growth of the town and a liberal allowance should be made for an increase in the volume of sewage. Owing to our limited water supply, the amouDt of sewage per capita would be small in com parison with the average. The disposal of tbe sewage would be an easy problem. It would not be necesaary to dump it into Willow creek, for the pol lution of this stream would be out of the question. The Gazette un derstands that W. O. Minor has stated that he would take care of all the sewage by distributing it over his alfalfa field?, thus eu riching the soil and irrigating the land which would greatly increase the growth of forage plant. The Gnzette does not wish to be understood as intimating that Republicans I ask the sanction of my party in my dacy for Secretary of .State, and that you hand at the coming primaries.
