So far as it fills tews as a commodity, it is a business; so far as it endeavors t di rect pub ic opinion and to influence public action, it is a profession. It is an honest business to sell news; it is an honest profession to mold publio senti ment, if it is honestly done. The aver age country edito is not always sure of his own status, because of the uncer tain status of his calling. Some count ly editors look upon themselves as semi- publio charges, like many country preachers, and subsist largely on do nations made through the good nature and the chnr;ty ci their patious 01 neichbars. Ihis type, we hasten to cay, is rapidly diappea-ing 'from the country press. It weekly journa ism has not so high a pi .ci in the respect of its readers or the confidence of its ad vertisers as the country editor thinks it ehou'd have, it is entirely because he has Wed to take himself and his busi ness or profession seriously, and he has accepted a place in the general eetitna tion alongside the yillaga joker, the' corner-grocery orator and the street-come- g lesip. The Oregon Press Association i do ing much to elevate the standaid of journalism in the state, and it is setting an example in independence, self-respect an l character that may well be fjllowed in naigljboriug states. For example, when any oflicesetke- is approached with a proposition to pay 8100, $200, or $J00, or even $800, to a newspaper for advertising, it is proper for him to inquire what kind if adver tising, who is to write the advertise ments, and whether editorial supp rtor commendation goes with it? If he does not get editorial support, he will then know whether or not be really desires so much advertising in that kind of a papjr; ai.d, if he is to get it, he will understand that the newspaper is violating its solemn and formal obliga tion to ail other papers in the Oreg' n Press Association. No doubt all the o'hers w.ll do eveiytbing in their pew if to heap on the venal journal al the odium it deserves. We hope so. We think so.
