Commissioner Henry Blackman returned to Portland Saturday morning. Chas. Hayes and family have returned from the Lewis and Clark fair. Mr. Walford, of the Morrow County Meat Co., was a passenger for The Dalles, Friday. Sunday was the hottest day of the season, the mercury licgering around the 90 mnrk. F. C. Hostetter, traveling sales man for a St. Louis Med. companv, was in the city a few days. County Clerk Crawford issued a marriage license Monday to Wil liam A. Horn and Miss Margaret F. Frey. A raflrriage license was issued Friday by County Clerk Crawford to James Scott Ball and Anna Mh bel Goshon. Karl Center hns resigned his position an dpputy county clerk. Garfield Crawford has been ap pointed deputy clerk to fill the vacancy. 8am Villiin?on, the wool buyer, came np from The Dnllea, Monday. Mr. Wilkicsou came up to wind up his wool buying Lusiui'ss for the season. The farm residence of Laytou Jones, of Six Dollar, was destroyed by lire last Saturday. After visiting the fair they will spend a couple of weeks with relatives at Bay Cen ter, Wash. Webster Chandler is visiting his parents, Rev. and Mrs. Chandler of this city. Mr. Chandler has just finished a course at the law school of the Boston University, where he was acquitted with high honors. lie will visit in Heppner during the summer. Mrs. John Rasmus has returned from a visit to Salem and valley points, Mr. and Mrs. Peter Borg were passengers for Portland, yesterday morning. Earl Conser and C. O. Hnelat are spending a few days in the monntains. There will be no preaching at the Baptist church. Sunday, the pastor will be at lone. James Carty and family, of Lower Morrow county, were Hepp. ner visitors yesterday. Miss Lenah Watera who has been visiting Mrs, James Hart left Monday morning for Seaside. Mrs. D. Hallock will leave Sun day morning for her homestead on Swale creek where she will spend the summer. Ed Cummings, of Lexington, who was confined in the pest house, afflicted with diptheria, hes recovered and has been discharged. Upon complaint of Sheriff Shutt all of the saloon men of Heppner are under arrest charged with violating the Sunday closing law. I will be prepared to furnish board at my mountain home at Swale creek during the summer. Rates $5 per week for table board. Mrs. D. Hallock. Noble & Campbell who were en gaged in the harness and saddlery business in this city have dis solved partnership, Mr. Campbell retiring. Mr. Noble is now sole proprietor. The transfer occurred yesterday. Phil Metschan, Jr., is iu re ceipt of a letter from W. Rea, of Forsyth, Montana, stating that his brother, John Rea, died at Forsyth, Montana, on July 8. The remains were buried at Fargo, Xorth Dakota. Deceased was a member of the firm of Rea Brothers, the well known sheep men. and u na well known in Hepp K. HoImtiD arrived in the Meadow creek country in the north part of Grant county early this week from Cisne, Illinois, and in two days time had purchased over 1G0 head of range horses, at prices ranging from 8G to $15 per head. Although the prices he paid were small, he took every thing that was offered him. Canyon City Iviglp. Jack McCuilough, Harve Mid delsworth and Oriu Ledgerwood brought in the last wool of the seasou the latter part of last week from the John Day and Mt. Ver non country. The freighting out fit consisted of two eight horse teams and one 10 horse rig. The wool brought in at the one trip was worth over $5,000. They took out a load of supplies and saw mill machinery for a new mill on Beech creek. Among the great attractions which the Lewis and Clark Expo sition will afford the visitors to Portland during this month will be the opening of the race meeting given by the Multnomah Fair As sociation at Irvington Fark Track, beginning on July 22. More than f)00 horses will be 6tabled at Irvington during the 49 racing days, which by the way, will be the longest race meeting ever held iu Oregon. The horses that will start in the stake and handicap events are the pick of those that raced last winter at Oakland and at Los Angeles. They will also visit Newport before returning. John L. Sperry, an Oiegcn pio neer who recently died in Port land, was a former resident of Heppner and is well known bj' the older residents of this city. Mr. Sperrv came to Heppner in the early 70's and was engaged in the stock business here for a num ber of years. In 1S78 he was elected sheriff of Umatilla county and moved to Pendleton. After the expiration of the term of effice he moved to Portland.
