experiment of a magnitude hitherto nn
tried, is to be attempted in this state.

"Co-operative Christian Federation"
with a capital of Fifty Million Dollars.
The objects of the federation are to buy
and sell land, to build railroads, tooper
ate factories, mills and dairies in Oregon,
to be owned and operated on the co
operative plan. The federation is to be

ed after years of study, for the purpose of

Salem, June 20. A petition for a
paidon that looks very good on its face
tut very bad when considered in con
nection with a protest, was filed in the
Governor's office today in behalf of J.
A. Chrisman. Chrisman is serving a 12
ye ir sentence for the killing of William
Johnson, in Galena Grant county. He
has served a little over two years of the
term. The petition recites that Chris-
man and Johnson had pome trouble in
1807 or 1898, and that thereafter John
son sought au a tercation with Chris-
man at every opportunity. By insults
and abuse and public threats be made
life nnberable until Chrisman moved
from Long Creek, Grant county, to Ga
lena, in order to get away from his
tormentor. Johnson followed him there
and sought trouble, with the result that
Chrisrmn killed his enemy in a saloon. :$
The killing was alleged to be in self- 'M,
defense, but Chripman was convicted jjjj

The petition for release is signed by a
large number of people living 10 various jg
parts of Grant and adjoining counties,
Creek, where Chrisman and Johnson
were known.
The protest was filed by men wlio H

and their difficulties. The protest avers
that Chriroan is a dangerous man,
possepsed of a violent temper and that
if he ehould be released he ill return to
Jxng Creek and his presence will be
menace to the peace of the community.
The fear is expressed that he will try to
get revenge on all thoe who were wit
nesses for the prosecuMon in his trial.
