Thursday Juue 8, 1905 Opening of the Portage. hat does the opening of the portage road mean for the inland empire? It does not mean immediate reduction of freight rates on railroads, but it means an immeasurable triumph for patient and persistent people. It means an entering wedfce into a one-sided transportation situation that has been the leading issue in this east em Oregon and Washington and north em Idaho empire for a quarter of a een tury. The portage will be a half a loat, at least, for a people's dire need. Lewis- ton, lying on the river bank, and having 'iver transportation, will literally leap forward. Unsettled district tributary to the Snake and Columbia rivers will be planted in wheat and alfalfa, and a commerce not now in existence will be wrung from the arid deserts of the river counties. The modest exercises carried out at Celilo at the formal opening of the port- ase, will stand in future history as the beginning of an epoch in the Inland Empire ! Growing out of the portage will grad ually come the ship canal and increased railway facilities. It is really not an end but a beginning of an luterstate struggle. FeariDg lest the river should really capture the multiplying traffic, the great railroad system3 will build branches, reduce rates and prepare to me t the situation. EaRt Oregonian. This action was taken by the eily council at the regular meeting last Monday evening.
