A distinguished resident of Muskogee ind one whom all men delight to honor is Gen. Pleasant Porter, principal chlet of the Cnek nation, eays the Kansas City Journal. Gin. Porter was born near the town of Clarksville on the Arkansas river, September 26, ISiO. He received bis early education in the Presbytsrian mission at Ta-Iahassee. Work congenial to him presented istelf shortly after ward, and for several jeeri he devoted himself to the rehalilita' i: r ar d build ing up of the Creek sehco'F that had Buf fered severely during the internecine trife. Again, in 1882. Cnicl Porter was compelled to take up armE.this time to ettle a dispute between his own people. As general of the Creek national army he ended th war speedily and for all time. And succeeded at the same time In estab lishing himself more firmly to the affec tion and esteem of his people, who, in 1899, elected him their chief. Ae leader f his people, Gen. Porter has ruled with wisdom and Judgment. He has always been a true friend to kit people and a faithful aUy of theUnit 4 States government. At the age of 3E fte married the daughter of Chief Justice ReillyKeys. She died, leaving him three Mttle children. Anothtr little one was left him by his second wife, who died when tbe child was but seven years old To-day, at the age of 6S, he is as hale and kearty, as pleasant and cheerful as ever. Gn.
