"We havu't had a destructive fire in the Blue mountain forests for forty years, or since sheep began sum mering in them. The eastern slopH of the Cascades where sheep pasture regularly have also been singularly free from fires, while the forests of Western Oregon and Wellington blaze regularly every -unnner, causing the atmosphere of the entire Northwest as far as Montana to be filled with smoke until the fall rains appear. Sheep eat off the grass and keep the uuderbruh trimmed so that tire cannot spread. Dry grass is what carries fire in the mountains and where sheep range the grass plo's are strewn with trails and thus every fire that gets out is stopped before going any distance. "The government has already found out that shepp k(vp fire. down in the mountains of Oregon raid so the forest rangers bi-p friendly toward the pasturing of sheep on the reserves. Sheep also keep the soil enriched and grass grows all the more abundantly in those portions of the mountains w here they are permitted to run. The prejudice against sheep on the part of government so-called 'ex perts' is rapidly giving way to a more rational sentiment on the subject of sheep pasture. 'Ji'it sheep cannot be turned into the mountains of Western Oregon very well without heavy expense in transporting them to and from their winter ranges. The sheep ranches of the Northwest are most ly situated east of the mountains, and so much ferrying and long dis tance driving would be necessary in reaching the dense woods of the Coast range. "Still if these woods had been traversed by bands of sheep for the past forty years burned districts would now be unknown, and mil lions of dollars worth of fine tim ber would be still standing where we have great stretches of black ened stumps. The tangles of tall fern that carry flame across long stretches would have disappeared, and where fires are now kept down at heavy expense to the timber land owners the woods could be as secure from fires as those of the Blue mountains or Coeur d'Alenes. The timber of these latter regions is more pitchy and therefore more combustible than that west of the Cascades, and the danger of fiie is thus greater were it not for the pasturing of sheep in the forests every summer.' Rich Blood On the Snake river, which di vides Oregon from Idaho, a dozen r more dredgers have been erect ed at various times to save the fine flour gold from the bars of that turbulent stream. These plants were at first of the suction pattern, but of late have been of the ladder and bucket chain type, and except in the matter of saving appliances are largely like the New Zealand dredger. Sluices were originally fitted with Cariboo and Hungarian riffles, which were ater supplemented by a burlap system of sluices for the finer gold. Values in the gravel of the Snake are exceedingly fine, the average running about 1000 colors to the inch, and the gold grain is flaky with ragged edges. Associ ated with this gold is a cubical grained black sand, which has as great 'or greater specific gravity for the surface area, and separa tion is very difficult. Sluicing on the principle of concentrating ta bles, saving the gold and black sand together, with the purpose of shipping both to the smelter, was a late experiment which promised success, as the smelters were ready to purchase this product at its assay content of gold f. o. b. the cars nearest the dredger. All work seems to have been unavail ing up to the present, as there is not a dredger on this part of the Snake river operating continuous ly. Despite temporary defeats, capital prosecutes the experiment al work with energy, and still an other boat is being erected near Weiser to test the efficiency of a new principle in saving the abund ant gold known to lie in the Snake river sands. Along the Pacific coast, both north and south of the Rogue's mouth, is found large areas with gold in paving quantities if it it could be saved. A larce num- ber of experiments have been made i to this end, but like the elusive 1 7 values of the Snake the fine beach gold has triumphed also and re mains a constant temptation to man's tireless patieuce hmI inex haustible ingenuity which some day will develop an extensive and ! profitable industry in these two sections of the state.
