MIL MCTSCmX, Jr., Prop. ENGLAND IS PKNU6 Great Britain Orders War Ships to Red Sea. FLEETS BEING MOBILIZED Tlie Admiralty lias I lie Excuse That It is Getting- Keady for Practice Maneuvers. London, July 18. Two naval orders were issued today by the' British Ad miralty, which are believed to indioate a determination on the part of Great Britain to protect British shipping from acts of aggression at the hands of the Russian navy. The first order directs the Mediter ranean fleet to sail at once from Gibral tar and proceed to Alexandria, Egypt, near the mouth of the Suez canal. The second order directs two of the fastest British armored cruisers to pro ceed through the canal and take up stations in the Red Sea at points where several British ships have been held up the last few days by the vessels of the Russian volunteer squadron. While the fact that these orders were issued was carefully guarded, and no public statement of their soope is pro curable, there is no doubt that the British Foreign Olfioe has decided that the tine has come to act promptly in protecting British ehippir ?, and to put an end to any angrt)ision on the part of the Russian cruisers. Well informed naval officers believe that the dispatch of this powerful Mediterranean fleet to the vicinity of the Red Sea, and the stationing of two of the crack vessels of the squadron directly at the points where the Russians are carrying things with a high hand, means that no further molestation of vessels flying the British flag will be permitted. From a secret, but unimpeachable source, it can be stated that not only is Great Britain to be represented by a strong force at the Red Sea, but plans are now being carried out which will bringtogether in home waters an en ormous fleet of vessels of war. The home and channel fleets are being mo bilized at Portland and Torquay, and are being brought up to battle strength by the addition of ships from the re serves. While to all intents and pur poses the nation is preparing for war, the Admiralty has the excuse that it is getting the fleets ready for the practice maneuvers, and it simply happens that thin mobilization comes at this time. M for Columbia Vields llt-aii tif ul (cius. A new and valuable industry may be started along the lower Columbia rrver, which will be that of gathering and polishing precious stones. For some time past Mr. Albright, who is now foreman in the Star brewery in Van couver, has occupied his spare moments in gathering peculiar-looking pebbles along the Columbia river in and near Vancouver. Mr. Albright ia not a pro fessional lapidary, but he took npon himself the task of grinding and finish ing several of the specimens he found and while there are many in his posses sion that are not as valuable as the owner might wish, still he has a very large collection of the most valuable gems of this character that can be found anywhere on the globe. These stones have been submitted in their finished state to reputable lapida ries and jewelers, who have pronounced them to be gems of great value. In his collection he has several fine opals, amethysts, fresh water pearls, garnets and the like. Many of the gems have been mounted. Some of these he still has in his possession, and many valua ble specimens he has sold at a good Dom in the family is not to be ex pected where a poor cook stove is used. That is only natural. For years many persons and compa nies have contemplated dredging the Columbia liver for the purpose of ex tracting gold from the sands, and many companies have been organized with this object in view. This has been deemed feasible, and is still being con sidered by several Minneapolis compa nies. This gold excitement has perhaps caused the overlooking of other valua ble industries that might be carried on with profit in this portion of the country and these acciden ai and frequent finds of Mr. Albright's has resulted in several experienced lapidaries arrnnging (o in vestigate the shores of the Columbia river, and if their expectations are real ized a very profitable industry will be no doubt commenced in the near future.
