' CHOP IS MUIIT. Wheat Yield of 1003 is 20 per cent Short. The wheat crop of Oregon, Washing ton and Idaho for 1903 la nearly 20 per cent less than that of laet year. The season in two to three weeks later than usual, and for that reason it is moie difficult to make an accurate forecast of the final result at ihis time. The above figures are compiled from the best obtainable data and are believed to indicate fairly the final out turn with a continuation of existing conditions There is still a considerable area of spring wheat that is so late that it is in danger of frost and fail rains, either of which might change the result now predicted. The dimens ons of th crop now being harvested are more difficult to determine than those of any previous rop since 189G There is a vast amount of new land in wheat, especially in Washington, and there is fuch a wide variation in the yields on this new land that perfect accuracy is impossible until the returns are all in. On the lands that have been farmed for many years, -good and bad yields are so indiscrimi nately mixed that trouble is encountered in sizing them up. Of the three states, Idaho has by far the best crop, fully 5 er cent better than last year. Oregon conies next with a decrease oi a little over 10 per cent, a9 compared with last .year, whi'e Washington is about 25 per -cent behind last vear's figures. The Oregonian's estimate on the Oregon crop hy counties is as follows: County. Bushels. Umatilla 2,750,000 Sherman 2,500,001 Union 850.000 Morrow 450,000 Vasco 900,000 liilliara 1.000.CO) Polk 700,0(0 Linn 550,000 Benton 500,000 Yamhill 450 000 Marion 400,000 Washington- 350,000 Other counties 250,000 Total 11,400,000 rcsns in it it bow. Itcv. V. I. Nickelseii Willidrw From ITlrtliodist IT1 inlstry. Spokane, Waph., Sept. 3 Rev. C. D. Nickelsen, deposed pastor ot the Metho dist church at Colfax, has withdrawn from the ministry and ended bv his own action the brewiag scandal which threatened to disrupt the annual confer ence now in session here. Nickelsen held a lone conferenoe with Bishop Hamilton last night and as a result his letter of resignation from the ministry was read this morning and accepted. Nickelsen's charges against Presiding Elder Brown and Rev. Mr. Ilodirson were also passed this morning and as .Mr. Nickelsen is no longer a minister the charges will not be read. Mr. Nickelsen was tried last Winter on a charge of conduct unbecoming a minister, towit, in asking Mrs. Dunbar, of Goldendale, a former parishioner, to come to Spokane and commit suicide rith him. Nickelsen pleaded temporary Insanity, but was duly ousted and his .-appeal was to be tried at this conference Bishop Hamilton says: "His resignation was accepted under re. I pointed out to him last night that this was for the best, that he was a ymng man. that by living a pure life in th fature nothing was to prevent his being reinstaed in the membership of tthe church, the task being that be must begin bis church life all over again. "As matters stand, no charges made Iby Mr. Nickelsen have been filed with the conference against Presiding Elder !Rrown or Rev. Mr. Hodgson. It is true that I received a copy of the charges, lout I have merely acted as their .custodian and they hAve in no wise come up for consideration by the con ference. 'Mr. Nickelfen, himself, has not been tried on the charges made against him "ast Winter. He merely had a prelimi nary hearing before the local church hody. By his withdrawal nothing more arill be done in investigating the cherges ' ag-aiait Mr. Nickelsen. Dewey Wanii Big; Navy. Nbw York, Sept 2. Admiral George Dewey has contributed an article to the current issue of a Navy periodical, in which he gives the strength of the fleets that Great Britain, France and Germany could assemble for their Hummer maneuvers, as compared with our e-mail fleet assembled at Bar Harbor. "Our immense coast line and our rap idly increasing world trade," says the Admiral, "demand a navy. We must have it for our own protection and it rests with the Navy League to install this idea into the minds of all classes of citizens until the pressurs of pub'ic opinion gives u aa-h a navy as is need ed for the country's prestige or safety." The British fleet that is in home waters alone fo-mig but a fraction of the British Navy and which would be available as an evolutionary squadron, includes 30 battleships aud 30 cruisers. The home French fleet includes 16 battleships and 11 cruisers. The home fleet of Germany, eight bat ileships and five cruisers. millCreeK Land Withdrawn. Walla Walja, Wash., Sept. 4. Three thousand acres at Mill Creek's head waters were withdrawn from all entry today by a telegraph order from the Department of the Interior which is supposed to design the withdrawal as a natural storage basin for Mill Creek's Spring overflow. The withdrawn strip is sections 1, 11, 12, 13 and 14, township 0, range 38, and ranges some five miles along the creek's had waters. The district was recently examined by Special Government Agent W. Chicago, Sept. 3. The published re port that Government deposits in National banks are to be materially in creased is declared by Secretary of the Treasury Shaw to be unfounded. Sec retary Shaw today made the following statement : "I notice some newspapers' accounts to the eflect that I am about to increase deposits of public money to the extent of 140,000,000. It is true I have $40, 000,000 available for deposit if conditions hereafter render it expedient to make so large an increase. For the present I am accepting only applications for small amounts that have been on file for several months, and am confining tbeee to agricultural districts." To Try For l-ole. Washington, Sept. 5.
