Convene Schwab II -ii a 'Hailoiiiifj Concern. New Yoik, Aug. 14. The latest trust is the tailoring trust, and Charles M Schwab, the steel king, is behind it. The facts came out today, when I A. Schwab, an uncle of the ex-president "f the steel trust, and David J. Welch, for many years right-hand man of the big woolen mill concern, began to make eon tracts on a mammoth scale. Both these men have sp-nt maoy years in this line of bu'-biess and are experts. Charles M. Schwab is known to have millions invested in several enterprises outside of the steel trust, but it was with great surprise it was learned he is to supply the enormous capital to operate the gigantic combination in the tailoring business now in process of formation. The trust, under the name of the United Taylors, will begin operations August 22 in New York City, opening up seven stores simultaneously. These will be increased from day to day until 101 retail branches are established in Greater New York, where there are al ready 12,000 tailors. Branches will be immediately es- l v 1 .1 i . 1 - ..: . 1 t i- 1 1. llgU-t l' III 'aeniftiieu 111 iaage Linen ui 1 uug uuui me Washington con- -'-"mry 111111 exiemieu a quicKiy a pos- sib'e to every city in the Union of 20, 000 inhabitants. Portland, Tacoma, Seattle, San Frareiaco and Los Angeles are the (irst of the coast cities to be in vaded. In two ypars' time the trust expects to have a vast chain of branches in working order, and will then be giving employment to nearly 500,000 men. A great central school will be establish ed in New York at which cutters, chep pers, trimmers and salesmen will be educated and then sent out through the couatry to branches wheie they may be needed. The trust will, as soon as pos sible, own its own mills, both here and abroad. At present, it has tecured t lie output of one mill in Massachusetts, and is now negotiating for more. The formation of this immense com bination was proposed to Schwab by hi uncle and Welch over a year ago. At Washington, D. President llooseveit does not l-irofess to know anytrritig special about financial u. otters, but realizes, in a general way, that the immense outstanding amounts of silver and gieenbacks, based upon a hmited supply of gold, is not a safe and sufficient mtthod of finance for a great jovemment. lie is anxious to have any remeuy applied which may pre vent an; thiog of a d'sastrons financial nature occurring in the future. At the samtime, since his talk with Representative Cannon, who is to be Speaker, and with other Western men, he does not desire legislation of a rad ical nature, w hich will be to the benefit have been the greatest on record. A smaller proportion of the salmon I aye gane through the canneries because cf the impreci dentedly large consumption by cold st'u aire or pickling plants. In the past two weeks the canneries have turned out perhaps 150,000 cases or more. Up to that time the output had been probably 100,000 cases It is im possible to get the price figures, even from canners themselves, because they are not sure what each of their neigh bors has done. And nobody who was interviewed yesterday would venture a guess at the product of the cold storage men. The open season will olose tomorrow at (i A. M., and fishing will be unlawful thereafter until (i A. M. of September 10. The salmon this season has been ot yery fine quality. The opinion is widely prevalent that early fish ehou'd be permitted to reach the spawning grounds by opening the fishing season a month later, say, May 15, instead of April 15. Artifical propa gation of the early fish is deemed necessary in order to restore the species. The late fish are the kinds which the hatcheries have beeu turning out, and the early salmon have suffered deple tion, in consequence, while the late fish, which have made up the extraordinary runs of the past two weeks, have been increasing in supply. This increase is believed to be conclusive evidence of the efficacy of hatcheries. He has been studying facts and tigures for several monts, and on the day he resigned the presidency ot tho billion dollar corpora tion he accepted the responsibility and hard work attached to thia new com bination. The majority of the details will be worked outby8ehwab himself at his offices at "1 Broadway, where he has an entire floor.
