Bu-t;aneu, nas aoont diea out in this county, &h far as cap be learned irom a large number ot persons owning 1 t eheep and cattle in this county, and the only complaint some have to make is as to the sheep from other counties passing iruw ninier 10 ineir summer ranges and herding too close to the homes and ranges of settlers along their route. The -v?hole situation can bs summed up by these interviews with some of the prominent Btnckmen of the county : F. II. Latollett, president of Crook County Sheepmen's Association, also manager of Allen & Lafollett. We are running about 7000 sheep this year, and are using about the same ranges we iiave used for years past, and do i ot ex pect to have any trouble with cattle or eheepmen. We have had none and know of no reason why we should have ny. Dr. Van Gerner, of Geiner & William son We will carry over after sale this season about 7000 sheep, and dont expect to have any trouble with any one. Our ranges are scattered among cattle and Jjorsemen, and we get along all right together. Willian Wurxweiller, of the Black Butte Livestock Company Our com pany has on hand about 9000 sheep and C00 cattle this season, and will useabout the same ranges we have been ac customed to use for our stock. We .know of no trouble likely to come on account of our stock business. Colonel M. C. Nye, the pioneer sheep (man of this county I will have less 6heep than la6t year, and do not expect to have any trouble in caring for them, acid if any trouble comes it will be from irresponsible people, and not from re sponsible men in the stock business. R. A. Stewart, of Paulina I am rang ing 5000 head of sheep, and will use the same range and camps I have been in iiabit of using. During the lambing season I was asked to respect certain Uinea, and did so, and dott expect any Iroub'e from any of my neighbors. Asked as to any war between interests ?n his part of the county, Mr. .Stewart -said all he knew was hearsay, and that rfome cattlemen had called on sheepmen to arrange certain ranges for both. They oonld not agree, and the sheepmen got atigry and threatened harm to some par ties. C. M. Cartwright, of the Baldwin Sheep it Land Company, Ilav Creek Ater all sales wo will have about 2:,000 sharp on the ranges and 400 head of "ittle, and know nothing but hearsay regarding auy range war. We have '.teedeu land enough to range a large part of our stock, and don't anticipate my trouble from any one. Our neigh bors on the range are the same as for vears past, and like our own company k'are all enlarged their business, both h'j,3p and cattle. I. JT. Gray, ex-Sheriff of Crook Com v tnd one of the leading fine cattle oreeders, when asked to give his opinion ;j.sr!.a the extent of the range war in this K;onEt7, says he thinks the resident bookmen have a better understanding imoag themselves than ever before, and il! advocate the annual meeting to aether of all the stockmen in the coun ity, as was done tin's year, and if any one has s grievance, get it adjusted properly Tlie only important complaint coming lo .the ;-o:ut committee this year was as to rllie migratory sheep owned in other counties. Mr. Gray's -horne range is on Crooked River, southeast of Prineville ;25 Mik?!', and for neighbors he has both yibi-f; and cattlemen, and has no trouble ;..ibout range with either intererest. "Yw, I am secretary of the Stock ,T.en's Association, and the names of a'l the members on the roll can be seen by .,iay one interested enough, to ask for thesi," paid Mr. Gray. Asked if t lie association had posted . my notices warning sheepmen otl'certain ranges, Mr. Gray was very positive nothing of the kind had been ordered, ;.inJ as long as the present officers and aierubers were on its rolls it never would. VLoever had posted notices had done so .in their own responsibility. LAST SM It TO ITIIMCS. Laudatory Letter Torn up ly tlie President. Washington. Aug. ) Secretary Root has always had the greatest admiration for Genera! Miles as a soldier, and had ma'ters been left in Mr. Root's hands the General would have retired witl nying cows, instead ot with an un it t i . ... precedented snub Mr. Root wanted Genera! Mi es to have the ho-or of b ing th last Com manding General of the Attiv, ai Con 1 V B gress intended, ana a week ago issued an order which clearly indicated that the command was to be discontinued At the same time, he prepared a fare well letter to Generrl Miles, which was of the most laudatory type. Mr. Root took the matter to Ovster t Bay and submitted it to the President Roosevelt tore up the letter, and order ed that a retirement letter of the coldest and most formal style be issued, and that General Young be appointed to the command of the Army for eix days, so that General Miles would be deprived of the honor which Congress intended hirri to have. In the past it has been the custom of the President of the Uuited States him self to issue an order announcing the retirement of the Commanding General of the Army, and at the same time call ing attention to his honorable service, etc. President Cleveland issued such order when Lieutenant-General Schofield, Miles' predecessor in com mand, retired in 1895. The same thing was done on other similar occasions. Everybody in Washington is discuss ing the matter, and on all sides it was agreed that the President had gone out of his way to administer a parting snub to General Miles. Peopl.j in Washing ton have known that the President hated Miles, but it was nut beli veil thatti.e Chief Executive wou'd tak occasion to show it so plainly. Mills' friends characterize the mutter as a piece of despicab'e meanness. Miles himself has nothing to pay about it. lie has beau handled so roughly that nothing coining from his superiors is a surprise to him. He naturally feels hurt, but has adopted the plan of ignor ing the.whole incident. Another incident which was most humiliating to General Miles occurred at the War Department during the re ception by the retiring Commanding General of his brother officers. General Miles himself wore and undress uniform, as usual in his oflice, but General Young appeared arrayed in the complete regalia of a Lieutenant-General. General Miles was astonished and an gered at seeing Young's uniform, but ie said Do;h ng. In Massachusetts are 22 women barbers and 4,922 men barbers. Having suffered for seven years with weakness and bearing-down pains, and having tried sev eral doctors and different remedies with no success, your Wine of Cardui was the only thing which helped me, and eventually cured me It seemed to build up the weak parts, strengthen the system and correct irregularities."
