Bill, "who shot Dick Driscoll early Wed
nesday morning is now a good indian
His redemption was effectpd last night
by the Indian police of the Fort Hall
reservation.
Bill was trying to sneak into Bannock
Creek, where the police were laying for
him. He was ordered to halt, but
started to rnn instead. His horse was
then shot, but he dismounted and was
trying to escape on foot, when the police
fired again, killing him.
Major Caldwell denies that "Wild
Bill" was insane, and says that he was
simply a bad Indian, who drank much
whiskey. Dick Driscoll says be was
bad with or without whiskey, and that
when be came to bis house Tuesday
at midnight be was Bober, but mean.
About 9 o'clock Wednesday morning

dian, aroused Richard Driscoll, who lives
on a ranch on the Snake River, near
Salmon Falls, and asked for some
blankpfs Driecoll returned to his house
and brought out a roll of bedding lor
him. Without further notice the Indian
drew a revolver and shot Driscoll, fol
lowing with another shot, which missed
its mark. Driscoll's wound is close to
the neck and just missed the collar
bone and jugular.

believed that after she bad killed her

couple were found by one of their chil
dren, three of whom had slept through
the tragedy in an adjoining room.

B. M. McDonald, president of the
Eastern Oregon and Washington Fire
min's association returned from Waits-
burg Monday afternoon, holding a con
ference with Director J. W. Morgan as
to the plans to be carried out by the
association for the coming year. It was
decided cot to hold an election this com
ing June and to let tli e business of the
association run along for another year.
Walla Walla is out, as no paid fire de
p irtment can be a member. La Grande
and Heppner being so far away from
this section makes it necessary that they
dropout. While nothing definite will
be done this vear, it is the desire of Mr.
McDonald to forma new league made up
of towns in eastern Washington, leaving
out Oregon altogether. Walla Walla
now has the cup, and as she cannot com
pete for it again, President McDonald
will order it sent to him and be will
bold it here until the next contest.

says statistics compiled by President T.
C. Powpr of the state board of sheep
commissioners fixes the total number of
sheep lost in the recent blizzard as 900,
000. Up to the time ot the etorin 600,
000 had frozen in the enow previous to
the blizzards making the grand total of
1,500,000 lost in Montana since Decem
ber. At an average of $2.50 this mean's
a monopoly loss of $3,750,000.
The figures are official, being based on
tables compiled from special reports
compiled and audited by J. A. Ferguson,
state commissioner of labor and agricul
ture, and Assistant Secretary of State
Marks.
