Miss Alice Bailey, of Atlanta, Ga.,
tells how she was permanently cured of
Inflammation of the ovaries, and escaped
the surgeon's knife, by the use of
jLydia E Pinkham's Vegetable Compound
The universal indications of the approach of woman's great enemy, inflam
anation and disease of the ovaries, are a dull throbbing pain, accompanied by
- sense 'of tenderness and heat low down in the side, with occasional
scooting pains. On examination it may be found that the region of pain will
?show some swelling. This is the first stage of inflammation of the ovaries.
"Dear Mks. Pixkham: I wish to express my gratitude for the
restored health and happiness Lydia E. Finkham's Vegetable Com
ground has brought into my life.
'I had suffered for three years with terrible pains at the time of
menstruation, and did not know what the trouble was until the doctor
pronounced it inflammation of the ovaries, and proposed an operation.
" I felt so weak and siek that I felt sure that I could not survive the
ordeal, and so I told him that I would not undergo it. The following
m.ek I read an advertisement in the paper of your Vegetable Compound
in. such an emergency, and so I decided to try it. Great was my joy to
3in.(i that I actually improved after taking two bottles, so I kept taking
it for ten weeks, and at the end of that time I was cured. I had gained
eighteen pounds and was in excellent health, and am now.
u Yon surely deserve great success, and you have my very best
vscishes." Miss Alice Bailey, 50 North Boulevard, Atlanta, Ga.

The Board of United States Engineers
detailed to investigate conditions at the
eite of the proposed canal and locks on
! the Columbia River above Celilo, have
returned, and the members will leave
for their respective stations in various
portions of the country.
Major VV. K. Langfitt, who was with
them vesterdav, said the the trip in the
river as a very pleasant one and the
board had no difficulty in obtaining the
da'a they went after. President Mohler,
of the O. R. & N., had placed his own
car at the disposal of the board and the
engineers took their own ti e in making
the inspection. They will probably
render their report to the Government
in time for Congress to act on the pro
ject at the next sepsion.
There are various plans projected for
the construction of the canal and locks,
and some provide for the works on the
Oregon side, while others favor the
Washington side of the river. Although
the engineers are reticent as to their
conclusions, it is considered likely that
the project favored is that of a canal
nine miles long on the Oregon side. In
this distance a fall of 81 feet has to be
overcome and this will be done bv
mems of three locks, each capable of
raising a steamboat to a height of 27
feet. The cost of the proposed work
will range between $3,000,000 and $4,
000,000. Great care is being taken bv
the engineers to gather all the data
bearing on the proposition, so as to save
much valuable time when actual con
struction shall have begun. There is
ample means for this, as most of the
appropriation made for the boat railway
several years agois yet unexpendd and
has been turned over to the canal and
locks fund.
Engineers View Obstructions.
The Dalles, May 15. The Board of
Engineers sent by the Government to
visit the obstructions in the Columbia
River ;near this citv arrived here last
n ght at midnight in President Mohler's
car. At an early hour this morning an
engine took the car up the river to the
scene of the 'proposed improvements,
giving the engineers opportunity to visit
the various points at their leisure.
The party returned to this city in time
to take the west bound noon train for
Portland. Hon. Malcolm A. Moody ac
companied the party in its inspection of
the obstructions.

"it doesn't 'look very, woiuiertul,"
commented Tsi Ann, tucking one foot
up where she could sit on it and the
throne at the same time, relates ilie
Chicago Tribune.
".Xo, but even in America no one can
understand it. Listen.
"Don't put that thing to my ear,"
cautioned Tsi Ann. "Is this another
of those telephones?"
"O no. This is worse than the tele
phone. It is a gas meter."
"A gas meter? What does it do?"
"The consumer?"
"How does it work?"
"That is a mystery. It is only known
that it works always "and untiringly.
It wrorks while you sleep and while
you wake. It never stops. It is con
structed after the Newtonian theory
of creation. It lias someth'iig in it
that just keeps it whirling on and on,
at so much per revolution, and nobody
knows what keeps it moving, and no
body can stop it."
"That's funny."
"Funny, yes. But very sad in Amer
ica. Listen to it. Hear it running
right along. Thank Confucius and the
900 gods of the Pale Green mountains!
The gas company never will get the
chance to read what this meter has
recorded."
"15ut," said the empress, "is there
no escape from this in America?"
"None."
"It must be won than manifest des

"Wu," remarked Tsi Ann, with that
intelligent smile which has enshrined
her in the hearts of curio collectors,
"Wu, I am glad you were sent to Amer

to become civilized."
"So had 1," acknowledged Wu, "but

"I wrote to

I would die."
"After my baby came in January, 1900," writes
Mrs. Nancy Abuer, of St. Paul, Ark., " I suffered
severely from all sorts of aches and pains, until
the following May, when I read one of your
pamphlets, treating on female diseases. I wrote
to Dr. Pierce for advice, although I thought
surely I would die, as our physician told me I
was more liable to die than to get well; your
fatherly advice caused my health to be restored.
I took five bottles of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Pre
scription, three of 'Golden Medical Discovery'
and three vials of ' Pellets,' together with your
other remedies, and I am now able to do all my
work."
Weak and sick women are invited to
