KAKTnqtTAKES IN THE ;SOUTII. Shakes South Carolina and Georgia and Rocks Lighthouse. Savannah, Ga., Jan. 23. Two shocks of earthquake were generally felt in Sa vannah tonight at 8:15 o'clock. News from the settlements along the coast in dicate that they were of sufficient vio lence to rock houses, From Tybee Island came reports of the greatest violence, and decided alarm was caused among the few who populate the resort at this season. Mrs. Evans, the keeper of the lighthouse, telephoned that five shocks had shaken the lighthouse so that in the living room 40 feet from the ground, the sleep ing children had been awakened and greatly frightened. In other houses on the island the shocks were as perceptible, and it was some time before the excitement there subsided. In the city no report of any damage nas been received, and it is doubtfnl if there will be any, as the sbocks were scarcely severe enough for tbut. LEXINGTON NEWS. Lexington, Jan. 28, 1903. R. A. Nichols and family return ed from Waitsburg, Wash., Mon day evening. A masqne bill be given at the Artisan hall Friday evening. Wm. Campbell returned from Weston, Thursday evening. His family have not yet been released from quarantine. Several pupils of our school are taking the eighth grade examina tion this week. The painters are finishing the interior of thd new hall this week. A Bpecial school meeting was held here last Saturday. A twelve mill tax was voted. There will be a wedding at the Methodist church next Sunday evening. Particulars next week. Samuel Warfield finished his earthJy race Tuesday morning, and crossed to the other side of the dark river. He was over eighty years old. He was only sick a few days. He was a pioneer. We will try to give an account of his life next week. Dave Brown returned from the Valley last week, bringing his bride with him. Here's our hand, Dave. Real Estate Transfers. Columbus, S. C, Jan. 23. A decided earthquake shock was ielt in this city and suburbs at 8:5G o'clock tonight. Augusta, Ga., Jan. 23. A Blight eaithquake shock was felt here tonight at 8 :13 o'clock. No damage resulted. Charleston, S. C. Jan. 23 An earth quake shock was felt here at 11 o'clock tonight. There was one distinct shock, which was not sufficient to cause any damage to property nor to occasion Be rious alarm. Reports from all points near the city indicate that the "shock was felt through Lower South Carolina. Miss Lilian Whitaker, of Lawr ence, Mass., has arrived in Tacoma, in answer to a fake newspaper story to the effect that 500 young men of that city were in search of wives. The city council met in special ses sion yesterday evening for the purpose of levying a city tax for general pur poses. By motion of Councilman Quaid, the levy was fixed at six mills. t.ood Shooting. Frank Roberts, Lee Matlock and J. II. Blake who entered into the events at the shooting tournaments at Pendle on, are well satisfied with the result of the shoot. All were inside of the money. Blake carried off a good share of the purses and Matlock and Roberts also got good money. The new county of Stockman to be created by the bill of Representative Burgess, which passed the house today, will contain about 1700 people and about 4S7 voters. The county seat is to be at Antelope. The assessed valuation in the limits of the proposed county now amounts to $900 000. The county will lie between the Deschutes and John Day Rivers, and between Crook and Sherman counties. Its area will be taken from Wasco and Crook counties. In tbe proposed county are about 200,000 Bheep, 5000 horses and 1S00 cattle. The new county will be opposed by the Crook county delegation. Although it encountered little or no resistance in the house, it may not get through the Senate so easily. The citizens of Culver and Hay stack, Or., have organized the Rab bit Exterminaning Society, for the purpose of raising funds and prose cuting a continuous war upon the "black tails." A Movable Fort.
