leg was broken in an accident a

D. P. Doherty bought five lots
of V. P. McAlister this week.
The Artisan hall is enclosed,
and will be completed soon.
Fred and lialph Eenge went to
Heppuer Tuesday evening.
Several of our ranchmen are
plowing. The ground is in good
condition.
A movement is on foot to in
corporate ur town.
Revival meetings are in pro
gress at the Methodist church.

After several days digging and
blasting P. L. Akers has plenty of
line water, which goes to prove
?that our farmers could find plenty
of the liquid if they would only

Since the snow and ice has dis
appeared farmers are busily en
gaged, and are expecting 1903 to
be the largest yield in the history
of Morrow county.
Bird and Clyde Swift, of Eight
.Mile Center, are solving problems
with the Goosberry pupils.
Mrs. Lurther Houston has re
turned from the vally and is very
much improved.
Walter Beckett is now a pupil
at the Liberty school.
Jake Jirown likes Morrow coun
ty better than California so he
may decide to stay with us.
The deaf and dumb brother f
Ben Akers, was the victim df an
attack of apoplexy, a few days ago,
his condition at present is better.

Misses Ollie and Mamie Robison

Tyndall Robison, who h is been

came in working single harness,

friendf, he nys that he and Old
Sol will try 1903 all alone. Al
though he told his mothar that his
knives and forks were nicer than
hers.
Miss Mary Beckett spent the
holidays at home.
Who will be the next postmaster
at Eight Mile. It. D. ltobison
would accept it.
Mr, and Mrs. Bruce Haines
and little son, Tomie, left for Port
lnnd Monday where they expect to
spend several days.
Mr. J. W. Beckett wants $10,000
for his Haines ranch. Before the
Lewis aud Clark fair is over he
can easily get $20 per acre, which
will be $2,000, Land will, and
must advance, now is the time to
invest.

Few Years.
The explorations of botanists have
developed, during the past few years,
certain facts concerning the Amer
ican hawthorns which constitute one
of the surprises in the field of bot
any, says the linston Transcript. To
the merely lay mind the mention of
the hawthorn commonly suggests
only an attractive ornamental tree
of English, or at least of European
origin; the idea that there are spe
cies indigenous to our own soil prov
ing generally an Interesting but quite
novel bit of information. And it
may be added that although stu
dents of the North American sylva
have always ben wall aware of a
number of fine native species, they
too, it seems, until very recent years,
had but a faint comprehension of the
somewhat astonishing facts.
So far as is now known, the prin
cipal home of the hawthorn is North
America. England has but a single
species, Crataegus oxyacantha, which
with a few others of continental
Europe have, in the hands of garden
ers and hybridizers, been so greatly
differentiated, that their various ori
gins have become a perplexed ques
tion. Japan, too, for a wonder, has
only one species, and but two or
three are yet known as indigenous
to China, though this great field may
vield others to more exact research.
American foresta, however, abound
in them. They are distributed from
Newfoundland to the Pacific, and
southward to Texas.

hardships and privations the colony is
now in such a flourishing condition

colonists is interesting. A horn i
blown, generally twice, with half an
hour's gathering time between. The
colonists as-semlde and the reader for
the occasion gives out his news, which
consists of interesting items selected
from the latest weekly papers and dis
patches from the Asuncion daily pa
per, which the colonists receive twice a
week.
